Tips for Your Staff Accountant Job Search
Quantify your reconciliations on your resume
Hiring managers for staff accountant roles respond to numbers. List the volume of accounts you reconciled monthly, the dollar value of transactions you processed, or the number of entities you supported. Vague duties get skimmed, but concrete figures hold attention.
List your accounting software explicitly
QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP, and Oracle appear in most job descriptions, and applicant tracking systems filter for them. Name every platform you have used, including any ERP modules, even if your exposure was limited to one function like journal entries or month-end close.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists staff accountant openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter by industry to target your search
Public accounting firms, private companies, and nonprofits each hire staff accountants for different work. Public firms emphasize audit and tax under tight deadlines, while private companies often want close-cycle ownership. Knowing which environment fits your experience helps you target the right openings and tailor your application.
Prepare for a technical screening round
Many staff accountant interviews include a practical component, such as a journal entry exercise, a reconciliation walkthrough, or questions on debits and credits under GAAP. Refresh your understanding of accruals, prepaid expenses, and adjusting entries before any first-round conversation.
Negotiate your start date around busy seasons
Staff accountant offers often land in late summer or early fall, but some employers are flexible on start dates outside of year-end or audit close. If you need a buffer, ask whether starting after a fiscal quarter close is possible so you do not begin during the most demanding period.
Staff Accountant Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most staff accountants?
MBE CPAs, Robert Half, and Jobot are hiring the most staff accountants right now, with openings concentrated in California, Texas, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Hiring volume tends to rise in the first quarter as companies backfill roles following year-end close.
How many staff accountant jobs are remote?
About 35% of staff accountant openings are fully remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with remote work most common in financial reporting, accounts payable, and bookkeeping-adjacent functions. Roles that require hands-on management of physical invoices, fixed assets, or on-site audit support are more likely to require in-office presence at least part of the week.
How do you become a staff accountant?
Earning a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance is the standard starting point, as most employers require it for entry-level staff accountant roles. From there, gaining exposure to general ledger accounting through internships or entry-level bookkeeping builds the practical skills employers want. Passing the CPA exam sections, even partially, strengthens your candidacy and opens doors at public accounting firms and larger corporations.
Can you get a staff accountant job with little or no experience?
Yes, many employers hire staff accountants directly out of college if you have completed relevant coursework in financial accounting, managerial accounting, and auditing. Internship experience, even in accounts payable or bookkeeping, carries real weight because it shows you have worked inside an accounting system. Highlighting your proficiency with spreadsheet software and any ERP exposure from coursework or part-time work helps close the experience gap on your resume.
What does the staff accountant interview process look like?
Most staff accountant interviews follow a two to three stage process. The first stage is typically a phone or video screen with a recruiter or HR contact covering your background and availability. The second stage is a hiring manager interview focused on your accounting knowledge, including questions on month-end close, reconciliations, and how you handle errors. Some employers add a technical exercise or a brief Excel or journal entry assessment before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to staff accountant jobs?
You can find and apply to staff accountant jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level, industry preference, and location, then apply directly to each listing that fits. No intermediary steps are required between finding a role and submitting your application.
