Job Summary
The Staff Accountant supports the day-to-day financial operations of Trevecca Nazarene University and is responsible for daily banking operations, journal entries, account reconciliations, and grant financial management. This role works closely with Financial Services leadership to ensure accurate and timely financial recordkeeping in support of the monthly close process, annual audit, and federal compliance requirements. The position will be a regular full-time, hourly, non-exempt position and reports to the AVP for Finance.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform monthly bank reconciliations for various institutional accounts.
- Manage daily banking operations including cash disbursements, electronic fund transfers, and account documentation.
- Prepare and post journal entries, including accruals, corrections, and adjustments.
- Reconcile general ledger accounts, including identifying outstanding items, researching discrepancies, and preparing corrections.
- Facilitate fund transfers and monitor interdepartmental transactions.
- Review and analyze expenses for accuracy, proper coding, and adherence to budgetary controls.
- Monitor and track expenditures of grant-funded programs to ensure alignment with budget, institutional policies, and grantor guidelines.
- Prepare grant financial reports and reimbursement requests for review and submission.
- Collaborate with principal investigators, project directors, and department heads to ensure fiscal responsibility and accountability.
- Assist in the monthly and year-end close process, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
- Support external and internal audits through documentation preparation and response to auditor inquiries.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives and automation efforts.
- Maintain confidential financial, employee, student, and donor information.
- Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, analytical and organizational skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to train and support non-finance personnel.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently and collaboratively.
Position Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- 1–3 years of accounting experience; higher education, nonprofit, or grant accounting experience a plus.
