Bookkeeper Jobs in Tennessee: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a bookkeeper in Tennessee?
Tennessee does not require a state-issued license to work as a bookkeeper, so the path runs through education and credential. Most employers expect at least an associate degree in accounting or a related field, and many prefer candidates who hold the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers Certified Bookkeeper designation or the National Association of Certified Public Bookkeepers certification. Community colleges across Tennessee, including Nashville State and Pellissippi State, offer bookkeeping and accounting programs that prepare candidates for those credentials.
Which companies hire bookkeepers in Tennessee?
Employers hiring bookkeepers in Tennessee right now include University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Hilton, and JRC Incorporated, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Tennessee's mix of large healthcare systems, logistics companies, and a growing small-business sector keeps demand for skilled bookkeepers active throughout the year.
Which Tennessee cities have the most bookkeeper jobs?
Memphis, Nashville, and Brentwood account for the highest concentration of bookkeeper openings in Tennessee. Nashville dominates because of its dense healthcare, entertainment, and corporate headquarters ecosystem, while Memphis benefits from major logistics and distribution employers, and Knoxville draws steady demand from its manufacturing base and the University of Tennessee's affiliated organizations.
Are there remote bookkeeper jobs in Tennessee?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 61% of bookkeeper openings tied to Tennessee are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how well the role translates to digital workflows. The tasks most commonly performed remotely include accounts payable and receivable processing, payroll entry, and monthly reconciliations for small and mid-size Tennessee businesses that rely on cloud-based accounting platforms.
How can I get hired as a bookkeeper in Tennessee with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is an accounts payable or accounts receivable clerk role, which large Tennessee employers in healthcare and logistics use as a gateway position for candidates without full bookkeeping experience. Completing a bookkeeping certificate through Nashville State Community College, Pellissippi State, or Volunteer State Community College signals readiness to hiring managers. Building proficiency in QuickBooks and earning the NACPB Bookkeeping Certificate gives candidates a concrete credential that offsets a thin work history when applying to regional accounting firms or corporate finance departments.
Where can I find and apply to bookkeeper jobs in Tennessee?
You can find and apply to bookkeeper jobs in Tennessee on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to the Tennessee market. Find the roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to each one.
