DESCRIPTION
North American Sort centers are part of the Amazon Transportation Services which enables next day free delivery for Prime members and seven days a week delivery for our customers. Sort Centers are part of the middle-mile operation; every day several million packages from multiple fulfillment centers across the US and Canada arrive in one of the ~100 sort centers where they are sorted to specific last mile delivery locations, in effect consolidating volumes going to the same place, which improves truck utilization and reduces transportation costs. Since launching operations in 2013, we have provided billions of dollars of savings to Amazon, improved shipping times for our customers and enabled delivery seven days a week - our growing presence in logistics space led Amazon to be one of the top 5 logistic operators in the US.
The North American Sort Center team is responsible for the Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A), investment strategy and new transportation initiatives for this operation. This is an exciting opportunity to partner cross-functionally to ensure informed decision making, innovation and sustainability in processes for a growing network. This role will partner directly with multiple senior directors within the Northeast Region of Sort Centers to influence business decisions across operations and finance. A successful candidate effectively manages relationships with business partners, provides sound and thoughtful decision-making, and delineates between competing priorities in a quickly changing environment. The candidate should demonstrate amazing analytical skills, ability to work with ambiguity with strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills as direct interaction is required with worldwide operations leadership.
Additionally, this is an exciting opportunity to partner cross-functionally to ensure informed decision making, innovation, scalability, and sustainability is achieved for a growing network. The candidate will work with multiple cross-functional teams from Operations, HR, Capacity Planning, Long Term Planning, FP&A, and Tech teams to focus on creating continuous improvement opportunities across internal and external stakeholders to define, design, and maintain performance measurements, reporting and reviews. A typical day in this role provides an opportunity to lead root-cause analysis and uncover core issues to drive cost reductions with stakeholders, manage, evaluate and create meaningful business reporting, and build and maintain complex financial models and analytical tools to measure overall financial performance. The candidate should demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills as direct interaction with leadership is common.
Key job responsibilities
- Identifies basic control risks, evaluates impact, proposes changes, and implements improvements to remediate gaps
- Delivers weekly/monthly financial performance reports. Uses financial systems and advanced MSExcel functions to work with large data sets. Outputs plans, forecasts, budgets, and consolidations.
- Works with a variety of data sources. Identifies incomplete or inaccurate data, identifies root causes of data issues, escalates discrepancies, fixes data where possible or partners to deliver a solution.
- Uses active listening skills intuitively to communicate data (both written and verbal) in a clear, concise, and unambiguous manner. Adjusts style for various audiences to articulate complex finance issues clearly.
- Identifies and implements solutions to resolve, improve, automate, standardize, or simplify finance processes.
- Makes thoughtful time management decisions independently. Prioritizes work, resolves issues, meets deadlines, and seeks feedback from your manager. Discerns between urgent and non-urgent issues and acts accordingly to solve them.
- Drives own self-development in the Finance Community: seeks opportunities to expand finance expertise. Participates in events, initiatives, and projects, then shares gained knowledge in and outside of your team.

About the team
Amazon’s Sortation Centers are the backbone of the Middle Mile Transportation Operation, enabling 1-day delivery for Prime members and delivery seven days a week for customers. At SCs, we are focused on improving delivery quality and speed while enabling flexibility and cost savings in the transportation network. The Northeast SC region supports 35+ individual sites and continues to scale operations with a focus on continuous improvement to drive best in class results. The team is heavily involved in day-to-day business decisions while providing recommendations on future proposed changes to drive improvement.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business, economics, or a related analytical field (e.g., engineering, math, computer science)
- 5+ years of finance experience, or Master’s degree and 3+ years of finance experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- MBA, or CPA
- 5+ years of identifying incomplete or inaccurate data, identifying the root cause and creating/implementing an escalation plan experience
- 5+ years of solving complex business challenges by delivering accurate and timely financial models, analysis, and recommendations that have a proven impact on business (e.g., financial savings, operational improvements, or customer benefits) experience
- Knowledge of and proficiency in Excel and SQL
- Experience working with large-scale data mining and reporting tools (examples: SQL, MS Access, Essbase, Cognos) and other financial systems (examples: Oracle, SAP, Lawson, JD Edwards)
- Experience delivering forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis, and data interpretation of results, or experience with documenting accounting conclusions

COMPENSATION
- The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location. Amazon also offers comprehensive benefits including health insurance (medical, dental, vision, prescription, Basic Life & AD&D insurance and option for Supplemental life plans, EAP, Mental Health Support, Medical Advice Line, Flexible Spending Accounts, Adoption and Surrogacy Reimbursement coverage), 401(k) matching, paid time off, and parental leave.
