Tips for Your CPA Job Search
Tailor your resume to license status
Hiring managers scan for your CPA license state and status immediately. List it in your resume header as 'CPA, Licensed in [State]' or 'CPA Candidate, X of 4 sections passed' so screeners don't have to dig.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists cpa openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter for your exact service line
Audit, tax, and advisory roles recruit differently and use different technical keywords. Search using your specific service line alongside the seniority level so you're not competing against candidates with different specializations.
Quantify your client or portfolio scope
CPA resumes with revenue figures, number of entities managed, or size of tax engagements consistently outperform those that only list duties. Pull real figures from your client work and put them on the page before you apply.
Prepare for technical case questions early
Public accounting interviews often include deferred tax scenarios, ASC 842 lease accounting, or revenue recognition questions. Review your weakest technical area before the first-round screen, not after you've scheduled the final.
Negotiate using compensation structure, not just base
CPA offers often include performance bonuses tied to billable hours or busy-season timelines. Ask specifically how the bonus is calculated and when it pays out so you can compare offers on total compensation, not headline salary alone.
CPA Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most cpas?
The companies hiring the most cpas right now include MBE CPAs, Calibre CPA Group, PLLC, and Grassi & Co., CPA's P.C, with the largest share of openings in Wisconsin, New York, and Illinois, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is consistently high at large public accounting firms, regional CPA practices, and corporate finance teams in sectors like healthcare, financial services, and technology.
How many cpa jobs are remote?
About 53% of cpa openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with the highest remote concentration in tax compliance, financial reporting, and advisory roles. Audit positions tend to require more in-person presence due to client site visits and team-based fieldwork, making them less commonly listed as fully remote.
How do you become a cpa?
You become a cpa by completing a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, accumulating the credit hours your state board requires, passing all four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination, and fulfilling your state's work experience requirement under a licensed CPA. After meeting those requirements, you apply for licensure through your state board of accountancy.
How do you get hired as a cpa with little experience?
Start by targeting staff accountant and junior associate roles at regional firms or in corporate accounting departments, which are structured for candidates early in their careers. Emphasize your exam progress, internship experience, and any exposure to tax software or audit support work. Firms that run formal rotational programs often hire candidates who are still sitting for the exam.
What does the cpa interview process look like?
Most cpa hiring processes include an initial recruiter or HR screen, a technical interview focused on accounting standards, tax law, or audit methodology, and a final round with a manager or partner. Some firms add a written case exercise or a review of a sample workpaper. The full process typically runs from first contact through offer in a few weeks, though large firms recruiting on a campus cycle may move faster.
Where can I find and apply to cpa jobs?
You can find and apply to cpa jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search for roles that match your license status, specialization, and preferred location, then apply directly to each listing from the same page.
