Who's Hiring

Staff Accountant Jobs in Washington: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a staff accountant job in Washington?
Washington's staff accountant market is driven by federal contractors, trade associations, nonprofits, and government-adjacent consulting firms concentrated in the Central Business District, Capitol Hill, and Crystal City. Candidates who understand federal cost accounting standards or fund accounting gain a real edge here. Familiarity with grant compliance and federal reporting cycles also sets applicants apart from those with only commercial accounting backgrounds.
Which companies hire staff accountants in Washington?
Employers hiring staff accountants in Washington right now include The Ned Hotel, Human Rights Campaign, and DC Green Bank, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Washington's employer base is unusually heavy on nonprofits, trade associations, lobbying firms, and federal contractors, meaning staff accountant openings here often involve fund accounting, grant management, or government contract cost structures.
Are there remote staff accountant jobs in Washington?
Yes, though availability depends on the role. Staff accountant work that involves month-end close, reconciliations, or grant reporting can often be done remotely, while positions tied to in-person AP processing or government audit support tend to be on-site. About 100% of staff accountant openings tied to Washington are remote or hybrid as of July 2026. Hybrid arrangements are especially common among Washington's large nonprofit and association employers.
How can I get a staff accountant job in Washington with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Washington is targeting nonprofits and trade associations, which regularly hire junior staff accountants and accounting assistants willing to learn fund accounting and grant compliance on the job. Federal contractors in Crystal City and Rosslyn also bring in entry-level candidates with basic bookkeeping skills and train them on cost accounting standards. An internship with a Washington-area CPA firm or a temp-to-hire role at an association can open the door quickly.
