Financial Officer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a financial officer in California?
The most direct path is a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or business administration followed by several years in corporate finance, FP&A, or accounting roles. California does not require a state-issued license for the financial officer title itself, but earning a CPA through the California Board of Accountancy or a CFA charter significantly strengthens candidacy. Many California companies expect progressive experience from analyst or controller roles before considering someone for a financial officer position.
Which companies hire financial officers in California?
Employers hiring financial officers in California right now include Ameriprise Financial, LPL Financial, and Westlake Financial, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of technology headquarters, major healthcare networks, and publicly traded entertainment companies creates particularly steady demand for experienced financial officers year-round.
Which California cities have the most financial officer jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Pomona have the most financial officer openings in California. Los Angeles leads because of its dense concentration of entertainment conglomerates, private equity firms, and healthcare systems, while San Francisco and San Jose draw heavily from technology company headquarters and venture-backed firms that require sophisticated financial oversight as they scale.
Are there remote financial officer jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 7% of financial officer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the role involves financial modeling, reporting, and strategic analysis that translate well to distributed work environments. Functions such as FP&A, treasury management, and financial reporting are the most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements.
How can I get hired as a financial officer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a financial analyst or junior accountant role at a California company with a structured rotational or development program. Large employers such as Kaiser Permanente, Chevron, and California's major public university systems run new-graduate finance programs that build toward financial officer tracks. Pursuing a CPA through the California Board of Accountancy while working in a staff accountant or FP&A analyst role demonstrates commitment and accelerates advancement into officer-level positions.
Where can I find and apply to financial officer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to financial officer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across industries and experience levels. Search the listings for roles that match your background and apply directly to the ones that fit.
