VP Finance Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a vp finance in California?
Most vp finance roles in California require a bachelor's degree in finance or accounting, an MBA from an accredited program, and a CPA license issued or recognized by the California Board of Accountancy. Candidates typically build toward the role through director-level FP&A, corporate finance, or controller positions at California companies, accumulating experience in strategic planning and cross-functional leadership before stepping into a VP seat.
Which companies hire vp finances in California?
Employers hiring vp finances in California right now include JPMorganChase, PayZen, and Citi, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. California's density of technology headquarters, health systems, and entertainment studios creates consistent demand for vp finance talent well beyond the largest household names.
Which California cities have the most vp finance jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Irvine post the most vp finance openings in California. San Francisco and its surrounding Bay Area cities concentrate heavily in technology and venture-backed companies, Los Angeles draws demand from entertainment, media, and private equity, and San Diego's biotech and life sciences industry sustains strong hiring independent of the larger metros.
Are there remote vp finance jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most senior roles, since vp finance work centers on analysis, reporting, and executive collaboration that translates well to distributed teams. About 65% of vp finance openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the state's tech-forward employer base. Strategic planning and FP&A responsibilities are the functions most commonly offered in fully remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a vp finance in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing a financial analyst or senior analyst role at a California technology company or health system, then moving into an FP&A manager or finance director position before targeting VP openings. Large California employers including major tech firms and UC Health-affiliated organizations run structured finance rotational programs and leadership development tracks designed for candidates early in their careers. Earning a CPA from the California Board of Accountancy and pairing it with a CFA or MBA accelerates that progression significantly.
