Tax Senior Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax senior in California?
The standard path is earning a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, then obtaining a CPA license through the California Board of Accountancy, which requires passing the Uniform CPA Examination and meeting California's experience requirement. Most tax seniors enter public accounting at the staff or associate level and advance after several years of compliance and advisory work. While a CPA is not always mandatory, nearly all California firms and in-house teams treat it as the expected baseline for senior-level tax roles.
How much do tax seniors make in California?
Tax seniors in California earn a median of about $97,050 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $61,770 for the lowest 10% to over $160,520 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax seniors in California?
Employers hiring tax seniors in California right now include KPMG, BDO, and RSM, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. California's large technology sector, entertainment industry, and dense concentration of Big Four and regional accounting firms create a consistently broad range of both public accounting and in-house corporate tax opportunities.
Which California cities have the most tax senior jobs?
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Irvine have the most tax senior openings in California. Los Angeles and San Francisco dominate because of their concentration of Big Four offices, large financial services firms, and major corporate headquarters, while San Jose reflects the in-house tax demand generated by Silicon Valley's technology industry.
Are there remote tax senior jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 58% of tax senior openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the desk-based and analytical nature of most tax compliance and planning work. Tax provision, federal compliance, and research roles are the most consistently remote, while positions involving close collaboration with finance leadership or state audit defense tend to require more in-office presence.
How can I get hired as a tax senior in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is joining a Big Four or regional firm in California at the staff associate level, where structured programs from firms like Grant Thornton and BDO actively recruit new graduates into tax practices. Roles such as tax associate, tax analyst, or junior accountant at California-based tech or entertainment companies also build the compliance foundation employers expect. Sitting for the CPA exam early and gaining exposure to California state tax issues, including franchise tax and apportionment rules, gives candidates a clear edge in a competitive field.
Where can I find and apply to tax senior jobs in California?
