Investment Banking Associate Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an investment banking associate in California?
Most investment banking associates in California enter through an analyst-to-associate promotion or a direct MBA-hire program at a bank or boutique advisory firm. FINRA Series 79 and Series 63 registrations are required to engage in investment banking activity in California and are obtained after employment begins. A finance, economics, or accounting degree from a California university or a top-ranked MBA program are the most common educational starting points.
How much do investment banking associates make in California?
Investment banking associates in California earn a median of about $109,110 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $72,840 for the lowest 10% to over $198,280 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire investment banking associates in California?
Employers hiring investment banking associates in California right now include JPMorganChase, Goldman Sachs, and Citi, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. California's deep technology, life sciences, and media sectors mean many of these openings sit within coverage groups focused on those industries rather than traditional industrials or consumer.
Which California cities have the most investment banking associate jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Newport Beach account for the most investment banking associate openings in California. San Francisco dominates through its concentration of technology and venture-backed company advisory work, Los Angeles drives deal flow in media, entertainment, and real estate, and San Diego supports a growing volume of healthcare and biotech M&A mandates that attract both bulge-bracket offices and independent advisory boutiques.
Are there remote investment banking associate jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. About 35% of investment banking associate openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how deal-driven this role is by nature. Client management, live deal execution, and internal team collaboration typically require in-person presence, though coverage research and modeling work occasionally appear in hybrid arrangements at larger institutions.
How can I get hired as an investment banking associate in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an investment banking analyst program at a California-headquartered firm, then promoting into the associate role after two to three years. Large California employers such as Wells Fargo Securities and Bank of America run structured analyst-to-associate pipelines that do not require prior banking experience at entry. Candidates from corporate finance, Big Four transaction advisory, or private equity operations who hold or are eligible for FINRA Series 79 registration have the strongest lateral angle into associate-level roles in California boutiques and regional middle-market firms.
Where can I find and apply to investment banking associate jobs in California?
You can find and apply to investment banking associate jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across cities and firm types. Find the roles that fit your experience and deal focus, then apply directly to each one.
