Tips for Your Investment Banking Associate Job Search
Tailor your deal sheet for each role
Your resume should lead with a concise deal sheet listing transaction type, industry, size, and your specific contribution. Hiring teams at banks and advisory firms scan for directly relevant deal experience, so reorganize your deals to mirror the firm's focus area before each application.
Target firms by their coverage groups
Banks hire associates into specific coverage or product groups, not generalist pools. Filter openings by group name, such as healthcare M&A or leveraged finance, and apply only where your sector experience aligns. A targeted application to the right group outperforms a broad one every time.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists investment banking associate openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Certify your technical credentials before interviews
Many associate-level postings require or strongly prefer FINRA Series 79 and Series 63 licenses. Confirm which licenses the role requires before your first-round interview, and note any active registrations prominently on your resume so screeners don't overlook them.
Prepare a live model for case studies
Technical interviews at the associate level frequently involve a live LBO or DCF exercise rather than purely conceptual questions. Build and practice a clean model you can walk through under time pressure, explaining your assumptions aloud as you go.
Follow up with the specific group, not HR
After submitting, direct any follow-up to the coverage group or product desk through a professional connection rather than through general recruiting. Associates and VPs within the group carry meaningful influence over hiring decisions, especially at mid-size boutiques.
Investment Banking Associate Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most investment banking associates?
The companies hiring the most investment banking associates right now include JPMorganChase, Piper Sandler, and Citi, with the largest share of openings in New York, California, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Bulge-bracket banks and large independent advisory firms tend to post the highest volume of associate-level roles year-round.
How many investment banking associate jobs are remote?
About 42% of investment banking associate openings are fully remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the client-facing and deal-intensive nature of most associate work. The sub-areas most likely to offer hybrid flexibility include restructuring advisory, private credit, and back-office capital markets roles, where in-person client interaction is less frequent than in traditional M&A coverage.
How do you become an investment banking associate?
Most investment banking associates either promote internally from an analyst role after two to three years or enter laterally from roles in private equity, corporate finance, or Big Four advisory. An MBA from a target program is a common entry point for career changers. Building a strong deal sheet, earning FINRA licenses, and networking directly with group heads at target firms are the most effective steps toward landing an associate offer.
Can you get an investment banking associate job with little experience?
Breaking in with limited experience is possible but requires a deliberate approach. Boutique advisory firms and regional middle-market banks are more open to candidates without a full analyst pipeline than bulge-bracket institutions. Demonstrating strong modeling skills through a take-home or live case, highlighting any transaction-adjacent work such as commercial lending or equity research, and connecting with associates at target firms directly all improve your odds meaningfully.
What does the investment banking associate interview process look like?
The process typically runs three to four rounds. A recruiter screen is followed by a behavioral round focused on your deal experience and motivation for the specific group. The technical round tests financial modeling, valuation concepts, and accounting fundamentals, often including a live LBO or case study. Final rounds at most firms involve superday interviews with multiple senior bankers assessing both technical ability and cultural fit for the team.
Where can I find and apply to investment banking associate jobs?
