Tips for Your Tax Professional Job Search
Tailor your resume for each filing specialty
Recruiters scan for specific tax code knowledge, so a resume built around individual returns won't land corporate tax roles. Swap in relevant experience, software tools like CCH or Thomson Reuters, and entity types for each application you send.
Lead with certifications above your job title
CPA and EA credentials do more heavy lifting than a job title on a tax resume. Place your active credentials directly below your name in the header so reviewers see them before reading a single bullet.
Filter openings by busy-season expectations
Job postings rarely spell out overtime, but phrases like 'January through April availability' or 'seasonal workload' signal heavy hours. Read the full description carefully and match your bandwidth to the role before you apply.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists tax professional openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare a technical scenario for the interview
Tax interviews often include a live scenario, such as walking through a depreciation method choice or explaining a specific deduction treatment. Practice narrating your reasoning out loud so you're comfortable thinking through tax questions in real time.
Negotiate start date around filing deadlines
Hiring managers in tax are acutely aware of the calendar. Proposing a start date that lands after April 15 or October 15 shows awareness of firm workflow and avoids putting your new employer in a difficult scheduling position.
Tax Professional Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most tax professionals?
The companies hiring the most tax professionals right now include KPMG, EisnerAmper, and Alvarez & Marsal, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Public accounting firms and large corporate tax departments consistently post the highest volume of openings year-round.
How many tax professional jobs are remote?
About 29% of tax professional openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting broad adoption of distributed work across the field. Roles focused on individual returns and compliance review tend to be the most remote-friendly, while positions requiring on-site client collaboration or audit support are more likely to require in-office presence.
How do you become a tax professional?
Start by earning a degree in accounting or a closely related field, then build hands-on experience through an entry-level tax associate role or seasonal prep work. Pursuing a CPA license or Enrolled Agent credential strengthens your standing significantly. From there, specializing in a specific area, such as corporate tax, estate planning, or international compliance, opens higher-level opportunities.
Can you get hired as a tax professional without much experience?
Yes, entry-level tax roles exist specifically for candidates with limited experience, especially at national accounting firms and tax preparation chains that hire seasonal associates. Demonstrating familiarity with common tax software, completing coursework in federal taxation, and earning an EA credential are concrete steps that can offset a thin work history when applying for junior positions.
What does the tax professional interview process look like?
Most tax professional interviews begin with a screening call focused on your background, software experience, and credential status. A technical interview follows, often including a scenario where you walk through a return preparation problem or explain a deduction treatment. Final rounds typically involve a meeting with senior staff or a hiring manager who assesses fit with the team's client base and workload.
Where can I find and apply to tax professional jobs?
You can find and apply to tax professional jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your credentials, specialization, and preferred location, then apply directly to each position that fits.
