Tips for Your Tax Specialist Job Search
Tailor your resume to tax specialty
List the specific tax areas you've worked in, such as federal corporate income tax, state and local tax, or indirect tax. Generic accounting resumes lose out to candidates who name the exact tax types, forms, and software the employer will care about.
Lead with your CPA or EA credential
If you're a CPA or Enrolled Agent, put that designation next to your name at the top of your resume and in your application headline. Recruiters screening tax specialist roles often filter by credential before reading anything else.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists tax specialist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target openings by tax software stack
Filter your job search by the tax software you know, whether that's OneSource, Vertex, Corptax, or CCH Axcess. Employers replace these platforms rarely, so matching their current system makes you a faster hire and signals genuine hands-on experience.
Prepare technical scenarios for interviews
Expect tax specialist interviews to include scenario questions on deferred tax calculations, nexus determinations, or ASC 740 positions. Practice walking through your reasoning out loud, not just the answer, because interviewers are evaluating your analytical process.
Negotiate around the full compensation package
Tax roles at larger firms often include CPA exam fee reimbursement, continuing education credits, and professional membership dues. Ask about these benefits explicitly during negotiation, since they directly reduce out-of-pocket costs tied to maintaining your credential.
Tax Specialist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most tax specialists?
The companies hiring the most tax specialists right now include Hantz, Intuit, and Paylocity, with the largest share of openings in Michigan, Texas, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Public accounting firms and large multinationals with complex compliance needs consistently post the highest volume of openings.
How many tax specialist jobs are remote?
About 55% of tax specialist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of August 2026, making it one of the more flexible roles in finance and accounting. Indirect tax, sales and use tax compliance, and tax technology roles tend to have the highest share of remote positions compared to provision and audit-support roles.
How do you become a tax specialist?
Start with a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, then gain direct experience preparing tax returns or supporting tax compliance at a public accounting firm or in a corporate tax department. Earning your CPA license significantly expands the roles open to you. From there, specializing in a specific tax area, such as international tax, state and local tax, or indirect tax, positions you for senior roles and higher responsibility.
Can you get a tax specialist job with little experience?
Yes, entry-level tax specialist roles exist and typically require a relevant degree rather than years of experience. Internships at accounting firms, tax season work at a national filing service, or volunteer tax preparation through programs like VITA all count as demonstrable experience. Passing parts of the CPA exam before you apply also signals commitment and helps you stand out against candidates with no professional tax background.
What does the tax specialist interview process look like?
Most tax specialist interviews involve an initial phone screen with a recruiter, followed by one or two rounds with the tax manager or department head. Expect technical questions on tax concepts relevant to the role, such as provision calculations, nexus rules, or return review procedures. Some employers add a short written exercise or case study. The full process typically runs two to four weeks from application to offer.
Where can I find and apply to tax specialist jobs?
You can find and apply to tax specialist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level and tax specialty, then apply directly to each position that fits.
