Tips for Your Certified Public Accountant Job Search
Highlight your CPA license status clearly
Put your CPA license number, issuing state, and current status at the top of your resume, not buried in a credentials section. Many applicant tracking systems filter for this automatically, and hiring managers won't hunt for it.
Tailor your resume to the service line
Audit, tax, and advisory roles pull from the same candidate pool but want different proof points. If you're applying to a tax role, lead with tax compliance volume and software like CCH or ProSystem fx. Don't submit the same resume to both.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists certified public accountant openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target firms by their client industry mix
Mid-size regional firms often specialize in real estate, healthcare, or manufacturing clients. If your experience concentrates in one industry, search for firms known for that niche rather than chasing the Big Four, where your specialization may get lost.
Prepare a technical skills inventory before interviews
Interviewers at corporate accounting roles routinely test ERP proficiency, close-cycle ownership, and lease accounting under ASC 842. List the specific systems you've worked in and the transactions you've touched so you can answer precisely, not generally.
Negotiate offer timing around busy season
Start dates before January or after April put you in the middle of tax season, which complicates onboarding for both sides. If your offer comes in late fall, asking to start in May or June is a reasonable request that most firms anticipate.

Demand is concentrated at both large public accounting firms and corporate finance teams in sectors like healthcare, financial services, and manufacturing.
How many certified public accountant jobs are remote?
About 34% of certified public accountant openings are fully remote or hybrid as of August 2026, making it a more flexible field than many finance roles. Tax compliance and advisory work tends to have the highest share of remote options, while audit roles requiring on-site client visits remain more office-based.
How do you become a certified public accountant?
You become a certified public accountant by completing a bachelor's degree with enough accounting credits to meet your state's requirements, passing all four sections of the Uniform CPA Exam administered by the AICPA, fulfilling your state's experience requirement under a licensed CPA, and applying for licensure through your state board of accountancy. Requirements vary by state, so check your state board's rules directly.
How do you get hired as a certified public accountant with little experience?
Entry-level certified public accountant roles typically go to candidates who have passed at least one or two sections of the CPA Exam before applying, because it signals commitment even without a full license. Internships at public accounting firms are the most direct path in, and many firms convert interns to full-time staff accountants. Targeting regional or mid-size firms over national ones improves your odds early in your career.
What does the certified public accountant interview process look like?
Most certified public accountant interviews run across two to three rounds, starting with a recruiter screen focused on your licensure status and software experience. A hiring manager interview follows, covering technical accounting scenarios such as revenue recognition, deferred taxes, or audit sampling. Final rounds at larger firms often include a panel with senior staff and may include a brief written exercise or case study.
