What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in senior property accountant jobs.
- Three to five years of property accounting experience in commercial or multifamily real estate
- Proficiency in Yardi, MRI, or comparable property management accounting software
- Experience preparing CAM reconciliations, operating expense billings, and tenant statements
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
- Knowledge of ASC 842 lease accounting standards and straight-line rent calculations
- CPA license or active progress toward CPA licensure preferred for senior-level roles
Tips for Your Senior Property Accountant Job Search
Highlight CAM reconciliation experience prominently
Common area maintenance reconciliations are a core competency employers test for. Call out the property types you've reconciled for, the number of leases you've handled annually, and any software you used to manage the process, like Yardi or MRI.
Tailor your resume to the property type
Multifamily owners prioritize different skills than commercial office or retail landlords. Read each job description carefully and reframe your bullet points around the property type in the listing, whether residential, industrial, retail, or mixed-use.
Pursue CPA licensure before applying at director level
Many senior property accountant roles that lead to controller or director positions list active CPA licensure as required, not preferred. If you're licensed in progress, state your expected completion date clearly on your resume so hiring managers don't screen you out early.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists senior property accountant openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for a technical accounting scenario in interviews
Interviewers frequently walk candidates through a lease accounting scenario under ASC 842 or ask how you'd handle a straight-line rent adjustment. Practice explaining your reasoning out loud, not just arriving at the right number, because your thought process is what they're evaluating.
Negotiate using market data by property sector
Compensation in property accounting varies significantly between multifamily, commercial, and REIT environments. Before negotiating, research what the Bureau of Labor Statistics and industry surveys show for your property sector and city, so your ask is grounded in the right comparison set.
Senior Property Accountant Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most senior property accountants?
The companies hiring the most senior property accountants right now include RPM Living, Jobot, and Regency Centers, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Portfolio size and acquisition activity tend to drive spikes in hiring at any given firm.
How many senior property accountant jobs are remote?
About 56% of senior property accountant openings are fully remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with remote arrangements most common in financial reporting and lease accounting roles rather than positions that require close coordination with on-site property management teams. Larger REITs and national property management companies tend to offer the most flexible arrangements.
How do you become a senior property accountant?
Start with a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, then build two to three years of experience in property or real estate accounting, working through general ledger close cycles, CAM reconciliations, and financial statement preparation. Developing hands-on fluency in Yardi or MRI accelerates your path significantly. Earning or actively pursuing CPA licensure positions you for senior roles at larger firms and REITs.
How do you get hired as a senior property accountant with limited experience?
Employers are often willing to bring on candidates who have strong general accounting fundamentals but limited real estate exposure if they demonstrate familiarity with property-specific concepts like CAM, NNN leases, and straight-line rent. Starting in a staff accountant role at a property management company or REIT and rotating through lease accounting and reporting builds the targeted experience hiring managers expect at the senior level.
What does the senior property accountant interview process look like?
Most hiring processes include an initial recruiter screen, a technical interview with the controller or accounting manager that covers CAM reconciliation methodology and month-end close procedures, and a practical exercise such as a sample variance analysis or lease accounting scenario. Final rounds typically involve meeting the finance leadership team and may include a conversation about software proficiency and your experience with audit preparation.
Where can I find and apply to senior property accountant jobs?
You can find and apply to senior property accountant jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your property type experience and accounting specialization, then apply directly to each position that fits.
