Tips for Your Accounting Manager Job Search
Tailor your resume to close cycles
Accounting managers are evaluated on their ability to close books accurately and on time. Quantify your close cycle length, the size of the team you supervised, and any reductions in error rates you achieved. Vague descriptions of 'overseeing accounting functions' won't stand out.
Highlight the software stack you own
Most postings specify ERP systems like NetSuite, SAP, or Oracle, plus Excel or reporting tools. List every system you've administered or configured, not just used. Hiring managers distinguish between someone who enters data and someone who owns the chart of accounts.
Target postings by company growth stage
Early-stage companies want accounting managers who can build processes from scratch. Established firms want someone who can optimize existing workflows and manage audits. Match your resume's emphasis to where the company is, not a one-size-fits-all summary.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists accounting manager openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for a technical case in interviews
Many accounting manager interviews include a scenario question: a journal entry dispute, a reconciliation discrepancy, or a month-end close problem. Walk through your thought process out loud. Interviewers want to see how you triage and communicate, not just whether you know debits from credits.
Negotiate beyond base salary thoughtfully
Accounting manager offers often include bonus eligibility tied to close quality or audit outcomes. Ask specifically about bonus structure, CPA exam reimbursement, and professional development budgets. These vary significantly and are almost always negotiable before you sign.
Accounting Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most accounting managers?
The companies hiring the most accounting managers right now include Robert Half, Amazon, and Jobot, with the largest share of openings in Texas, California, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Demand is consistent across corporate finance, healthcare systems, and regional public accounting firms.
How many accounting manager jobs are remote?
About 53% of accounting manager openings are fully remote or hybrid as of August 2026, though on-site roles remain common in industries with complex inventory or physical operations. Financial reporting and general ledger roles tend to have the highest share of remote and hybrid arrangements compared to cost accounting or plant controller positions.
How do you become an accounting manager?
Start by earning a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, then build several years of experience in staff or senior accountant roles where you own reconciliations and close processes. Earning a CPA license significantly accelerates the path. From there, take on supervisory responsibility, even informally, and demonstrate you can manage deadlines, review others' work, and communicate results to leadership.
Can you get hired as an accounting manager with limited management experience?
Yes, especially if you've led projects, mentored junior staff, or managed workflows without a formal supervisory title. Emphasize any cross-functional coordination, process improvements you drove independently, and times you presented financials to non-accounting stakeholders. Smaller companies and growth-stage organizations are more likely to promote or hire strong senior accountants into their first management role.
What does the accounting manager interview process look like?
Most processes include an initial recruiter screen, a technical interview covering close processes, GAAP knowledge, and system experience, and then a panel or hiring manager round focused on leadership scenarios. Some employers add a take-home case study involving a reconciliation problem or a close process analysis. References are typically checked before an offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to accounting manager jobs?
You can find and apply to accounting manager jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience, industry background, and location preferences, then apply directly to each one that fits.
