WHY THIS ROLE, WHY NOW
- Four-day work week for most of the year, with five day weeks during peak periods
- Direct ownership of the monthly close, grant tracking, and cost allocation across two entities and four California offices
- Close partnership with the Finance Director and department leads across the organization, translating financial information for non finance colleagues
- Comprehensive benefits package, including health, vision and dental coverage, 401(k) with employer match, 12 days PTO, 12 holidays, a year end office closure between Christmas and New Year, and additional benefits that support employee wellbeing and work life balance
Position Summary
- Own the monthly close, including journal entries, reconciliations, and the close calendar
- Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable, and keep invoices moving out and getting paid on time
- Oversee our outsourced bookkeeper's day to day work and serve as their primary point of contact
- Maintain accurate expense coding and documentation across all four offices
- Keep our accounting policies and procedure documentation current
- Support the transition of bookkeeping from outsourced to in house, and supervise the staff accountant once that role is filled
- Answer staff questions about expense reimbursement, escalating as needed
- Support year end filings, including 1099 forms
- Set up new grants in our accounting system with budgets, restrictions, and reporting deadlines
- Track spending against grant budgets and flag variances to the Finance Director and program leads early
- Manage restricted revenue recognition and release from restriction
- Allocate expenses across grants and entities accurately and consistently
- Prepare financial reports for funders and get them out on deadline
- Run overhead allocation analyses to support new grant proposals
- Maintain the cost allocation between our 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4), including shared services and staff time
- Support timekeeping and allocation practices that hold up to review
- Partner with the Finance Director, outside counsel, and reporting consultants on lobbying, electoral, and political action committee (PAC) compliance
- Help ensure PAC deposits, reimbursements, and reporting are handled accurately
- Produce monthly budget to actual reports for departments, projects, and grants, and walk department leads through them
- Support the annual budget process and monthly forecasting
- Support the annual audit and Form 990 preparation
- Provide backup coverage for routine Finance Director responsibilities during planned absences
- Solid nonprofit accounting experience: roughly four or more years in accounting or finance, with meaningful time in a nonprofit setting. If your experience is in a different sector but you know your way around fund accounting, tell us
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field required
- You can run a close. You have owned or substantially supported a monthly close and know what it takes to get it done accurately and on time
- Comfort with grant accounting: you have tracked restricted funds, prepared reports for funders, and can explain a variance without making it sound like an accusation
- Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and how it applies to nonprofit financial reporting
- Strong QuickBooks Online skills (or a comparable system you learned quickly) and real fluency in Excel
- You explain things well. Much of this job is translating financial information for people who don't work in finance, so clear, patient communication matters more here than it might elsewhere
- You are organized and you follow through. With four offices, multiple grants, and two entities, the details add up, and we need someone who tracks them without being chased
- You care about what we are working on. You don't need an environmental background, but our mission should mean something to you
- Experience with 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) structures, especially cost allocation between them
- Familiarity with PAC accounting and California political reporting requirements
- Experience with Paylocity or a comparable payroll platform
- Experience supervising staff or managing outside contractors
- Experience supporting an audit from the preparer's side

Accounting Manager Jobs in Los Angeles: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a accounting manager job in Los Angeles?
Focus on the sectors that drive the most local hiring: entertainment and media companies in Burbank and Hollywood, real estate investment firms in Century City, healthcare systems throughout the Westside, and professional services firms downtown. Candidates who combine CPA credentials with industry-specific experience in one of these verticals stand out. Networking through local CPA Society of Los Angeles events and targeting mid-size regional firms can also open doors faster than the large national employer pools.
Which companies hire accounting managers in Los Angeles?
Companies currently hiring accounting managers in Los Angeles include ghj, TikTok, and Metropolitan Industries, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Los Angeles draws a wide mix of employers, from entertainment studios and private equity-backed firms to large hospital systems and regional professional services offices.
Are there remote accounting manager jobs in Los Angeles?
Yes, though remote availability depends heavily on the employer and sector, since many accounting manager roles require close coordination with finance teams, auditors, and department heads on-site. About 59% of accounting manager openings tied to Los Angeles are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with the strongest remote options coming from technology companies and multi-location professional services firms. Budgeting, financial reporting, and systems oversight tasks are the functions most commonly handled off-site.
How can I get a accounting manager job in Los Angeles with little or no experience?
The most realistic path in Los Angeles is moving up from a senior accountant or accounting supervisor role within a mid-size entertainment company, real estate firm, or regional healthcare organization, where smaller finance teams create faster promotion cycles. Targeting companies in Culver City's growing tech and media corridor or smaller boutique firms in the South Bay can give candidates management exposure earlier than large corporate environments. Familiarity with California-specific compliance requirements and proficiency in ERP systems like NetSuite or SAP are practical edges that resonate with Los Angeles hiring managers.
Which industries hire the most accounting managers in Los Angeles?
Los Angeles accounting manager roles concentrate in Investment & Asset Management, Food & Beverage, and Fashion & Apparel, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. The city's outsized entertainment industry, active commercial real estate market, and large hospital and healthcare network all create sustained, year-round demand for accounting leadership at the manager level.
