Tips for Your Equity Trader Job Search
Quantify your P&L and execution metrics
Hiring managers at trading firms want numbers, not narratives. List your average daily volume handled, Sharpe ratios you contributed to, or slippage improvements you drove. Generic phrases like 'managed equity portfolios' get passed over without hard figures behind them.
Tailor applications to desk type
A prop-firm posting and an asset-manager posting expect completely different things. Prop desks weight risk tolerance and speed under pressure. Buy-side roles emphasize fundamental research integration. Read each job description closely and reframe your experience to match the specific desk's mandate.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists equity trader openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Earn your Series 57 before applying
Most equity trader roles at registered broker-dealers require a Series 57 license. If you're between jobs or transitioning into trading, passing the exam before you apply removes a common screening filter and signals you're ready to sit at a live desk from day one.
Prepare for a live trading simulation
Most firms beyond entry level run a market simulation or case-study round before the final interview. Practice reading Level II quotes, articulating order-routing logic, and defending position sizing decisions out loud. Stumbling on execution mechanics in a timed environment ends candidacies quickly.
Negotiate desk assignment, not just salary
At larger banks and funds, the desk you start on shapes your career trajectory. During the offer stage, ask directly which strategies the desk runs, what your rotation options are, and whether lateral moves to other books are common. Getting assigned to a shrinking desk matters as much as the offer itself.
Equity Trader Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most equity traders?
The companies hiring the most equity traders right now include Equity Residential, Morgan Stanley, and Natixis, with the largest share of openings in New York, Illinois, and Georgia, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand tends to be concentrated at investment banks, prop trading firms, and large asset managers.
How many equity trader jobs are remote?
About 9% of equity trader openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than most finance roles because live market access and desk infrastructure are typically required. Quantitative research, risk analytics, and back-office trading support roles within the broader equity trading function tend to have the most remote flexibility.
How do you become an equity trader?
Start by earning a bachelor's degree in finance, economics, or a quantitative field, then pass the Series 57 exam, which is required to trade equities at a registered broker-dealer. Build hands-on experience through internships at trading desks, prop firms, or market-making operations. Proficiency in Bloomberg, order management systems, and at least one programming language used for quantitative analysis strengthens your candidacy significantly.
Can you get an equity trader job with little experience?
Yes, junior trader and trading analyst roles exist specifically for candidates with limited professional experience. Firms recruiting at this level prioritize strong quantitative aptitude, a passed or scheduled Series 57 exam, and demonstrated market interest through personal trading accounts, finance coursework, or trading competitions. Prop trading firms often run structured training programs and evaluate candidates through aptitude tests rather than requiring prior desk experience.
What does the equity trader interview process look like?
The process typically starts with a phone screen focused on your background and market knowledge, followed by a technical round covering equity valuation, order types, and market microstructure. Most firms then run a live or simulated trading exercise where you execute orders under time pressure and explain your decisions. Final rounds often include a behavioral interview with senior traders and, at larger institutions, a risk or compliance review before an offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to equity trader jobs?
You can find and apply to equity trader jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level and specialization, then apply directly to each one. No external redirects or third-party applications are involved.
