Tax Senior Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax senior in Illinois?
Becoming a tax senior in Illinois starts with earning a bachelor's degree in accounting or a closely related field and passing the CPA exam administered through the Illinois Board of Examiners, which oversees licensure in the state. Illinois requires candidates to complete the education and experience hours set by the Board before the CPA license is issued. Most employers expect candidates to hold or be actively pursuing their CPA, along with several years of tax-focused public accounting or corporate experience.
How much do tax seniors make in Illinois?
Tax seniors in Illinois earn a median of about $80,230 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $54,510 for the lowest 10% to over $131,990 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax seniors in Illinois?
Employers hiring tax seniors in Illinois right now include BDO, Wipfli, and Platform Accounting, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's large concentration of regional and national accounting firms alongside major corporate headquarters in the Chicago area creates consistent demand for experienced tax professionals across both public and industry settings.
Which Illinois cities have the most tax senior jobs?
Chicago, Naperville, and Deerfield have the most tax senior openings in Illinois. Chicago dominates because it is home to the Illinois offices of every major public accounting firm and hundreds of corporate tax departments, while Naperville and Schaumburg attract openings tied to the dense corridor of company headquarters and regional finance centers in the Chicago suburbs.
Are there remote tax senior jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields, since tax senior work is largely analytical and document-based rather than requiring physical presence. About 72% of tax senior openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the broader flexibility accounting firms and corporate tax departments have adopted. Tax research, return review, and provision work tend to be the most remote-eligible components of the role.
How can I get hired as a tax senior in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is joining a Chicago-area public accounting firm at the staff or associate level and working toward the tax senior title through promotion. Large Illinois employers like Deloitte, KPMG, and Grant Thornton run structured new-graduate programs that place candidates directly into tax practices with mentorship and CPA exam support built in. Moving laterally from an audit associate or financial reporting role is another recognized path. Sitting for the CPA exam early, even before licensure is complete, gives candidates a meaningful edge in a market where hiring managers treat the credential as a baseline.
Where can I find and apply to tax senior jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to tax senior jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings updated regularly. Find roles that fit your experience and specialization, then apply directly to the employer. No extra steps are needed to access the listings.
