Life Insurance Agent Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a life insurance agent in New York?
To become a life insurance agent in New York, you must obtain a life insurance producer license through the New York State Department of Financial Services. The process requires completing a pre-licensing education course approved by the Department, passing the New York Life, Accident, and Health licensing exam, and submitting a license application. No college degree is mandated, though many employers prefer candidates with a background in finance or business.
Which companies hire life insurance agents in New York?
Companies currently hiring life insurance agents in New York include State Farm, Principled., and New York Life, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New York's deep concentration of insurance headquarters, mutual companies, and financial services firms means hiring activity stays consistent throughout the year across both the metro area and upstate offices.
Which New York cities have the most life insurance agent jobs?
The cities with the most life insurance agent openings in New York are White Plains, Scotia, and Oakdale. New York City leads by a wide margin given its density of insurance company headquarters, wealth management firms, and Fortune 500 employers, while Albany and Buffalo draw demand from regional carriers, benefits brokers, and government employee benefit programs tied to those markets.
Are there remote life insurance agent jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields because the role often relies on in-person client meetings and relationship development. About 33% of life insurance agent openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting a shift toward phone and video-based client consultations. Roles focused on renewals, inside sales, or group benefits administration tend to offer the most remote flexibility.
How can I get hired as a life insurance agent in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a career agent or associate program run by large mutual insurers with New York operations, such as New York Life or Guardian Life, which recruit candidates without prior sales experience and provide structured training toward licensure. Roles like licensed customer service representative or benefits coordinator at regional brokerages are common lateral entry points. Obtaining your New York life insurance producer license before applying gives you a clear edge over unlicensed candidates.
Where can I find and apply to life insurance agent jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to life insurance agent jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current New York openings across insurers, brokerages, banks, and financial advisory firms. Find roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly to the employer from the listing.
