Investment Banking Analyst Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an investment banking analyst in California?
Most investment banking analysts in California enter the field through a bachelor's degree in finance, economics, or accounting, then obtain FINRA Series 79 and Series 63 licenses, which are required to work on investment banking transactions regardless of employer. California does not have a separate state licensing board for this role. Large California banks and boutique firms on the West Coast typically hire directly from university recruiting programs at schools like UC Berkeley, UCLA, and USC.
How much do investment banking analysts make in California?
Investment banking analysts in California earn a median of about $109,110 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $72,840 for the lowest 10% to over $198,280 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire investment banking analysts in California?
Employers hiring investment banking analysts in California right now include JPMorganChase, Goldman Sachs, and Citi, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. California's concentration of technology firms and venture-backed companies means many openings sit within tech-focused banking groups at both bulge-bracket and regional boutique firms headquartered in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Which California cities have the most investment banking analyst jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Newport Beach account for the largest share of investment banking analyst openings in California. San Francisco dominates due to its dense concentration of technology and venture capital clients, while Los Angeles draws significant deal flow from entertainment, real estate, and healthcare sectors, making both metros natural anchors for the state's investment banking hiring activity.
Are there remote investment banking analyst jobs in California?
Yes, but they're relatively limited given the client-facing, deal-intensive nature of the role. About 35% of investment banking analyst openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with hybrid arrangements more common than fully remote positions. Research, financial modeling, and pitch preparation tasks are the parts of the role most frequently performed off-site.
How can I get hired as an investment banking analyst in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a summer analyst internship, which large California firms like Wells Fargo and JPMorgan offer through structured campus recruiting programs at California universities. Candidates coming from adjacent roles such as equity research assistant, corporate development analyst, or Big Four advisory associate regularly make lateral moves into junior analyst seats. Passing the Series 79 before interviewing and building a modeling portfolio through a recognized training program gives candidates a measurable edge in California's competitive entry-level market.
Where can I find and apply to investment banking analyst jobs in California?
You can find and apply to investment banking analyst jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to the employers posting them.
