Insurance Agent Jobs in Ohio: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a insurance agent in Ohio?
To become a licensed insurance agent in Ohio, you must complete a state-approved pre-licensing education course, pass the Ohio insurance licensing exam administered through the Ohio Department of Insurance, and submit a license application through the National Insurance Producer Registry. Ohio requires separate licenses for each line of authority, such as property and casualty or life and health. A high school diploma is the minimum education requirement, though many employers prefer candidates with a college degree in business or a related field.
Which companies hire insurance agents in Ohio?
Employers hiring insurance agents in Ohio right now include State Farm, Shelter Insurance Companies, and Farmers Insurance, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Ohio's concentration of large carrier headquarters and independent agency networks means consistent openings across both captive and independent agent models throughout the state.
Which Ohio cities have the most insurance agent jobs?
Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati have the most insurance agent openings in Ohio. Columbus drives volume as the state capital and home to Nationwide's headquarters, while Cleveland and Cincinnati generate strong demand from regional carriers, independent brokerages, and the large commercial and employee benefits markets tied to each metro's corporate base.
Are there remote insurance agent jobs in Ohio?
Yes, and they are more common than in many fields, since a significant portion of insurance agent work involves phone, email, and digital quoting rather than in-person visits. About 41% of insurance agent openings tied to Ohio are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting ongoing flexibility among carriers and agencies. Personal lines sales, customer service roles, and inside sales positions are the most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements.
How can I get hired as a insurance agent in Ohio with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is obtaining your Ohio insurance producer license first, which signals commitment before your first interview. Large Ohio carriers such as Nationwide and Progressive run formal new-agent training programs that pair licensure support with supervised sales experience. Entry-level roles titled customer service representative, policy service agent, or insurance sales trainee are common starting points at both captive agencies and independent shops. Candidates moving from retail sales, banking, or financial services also find it easier to make the transition because Ohio employers value demonstrated sales ability over direct insurance experience.
Where can I find and apply to insurance agent jobs in Ohio?
You can find and apply to insurance agent jobs in Ohio on Migrate Mate, which lists current Ohio openings from employers across the state. Search the listings, find roles that fit your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that match.
