Tax Accountant Jobs in Minnesota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax accountant in Minnesota?
Most tax accountant roles in Minnesota require at least a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, and employers strongly prefer candidates who hold or are pursuing a CPA license. Licensure is issued by the Minnesota Board of Accountancy, which requires passing all four sections of the Uniform CPA Exam and completing the required supervised experience hours. Candidates without a CPA can enter the field in staff or junior tax roles, often with plans to sit for the exam.
How much do tax accountants make in Minnesota?
Tax accountants in Minnesota earn a median of about $59,200 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $36,520 for the lowest 10% to over $95,520 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax accountants in Minnesota?
Companies currently hiring tax accountants in Minnesota include Current, Haga Kommer, and TMS Financial, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Minnesota's large corporate headquarters, major healthcare systems, and regional public accounting firms are consistently among the most active employers for tax accounting talent in the state.
Which Minnesota cities have the most tax accountant jobs?
The cities with the most tax accountant openings in Minnesota are Saint Paul, Eden Prairie, and Duluth. The Twin Cities account for the majority of listings, driven by the concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, regional banks, and large professional services firms, while Rochester's healthcare economy and Duluth's industrial and port-related industries support consistent demand outside the metro.
Are there remote tax accountant jobs in Minnesota?
Yes, and more than most fields, since tax accountant work is largely analytical and document-driven rather than tied to a physical worksite. About 36% of tax accountant openings tied to Minnesota are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how well the role adapts to distributed work. Tax review, return preparation, and compliance research are the functions most commonly offered on a fully remote basis.
How can I get hired as a tax accountant in Minnesota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or staff-level role at a Twin Cities public accounting firm, where firms like regional offices of mid-size CPA practices hire new graduates each busy season and often convert strong interns to full-time staff. Large Minnesota employers such as UnitedHealth Group and Target also post junior finance and tax analyst roles that serve as internal entry points. Candidates who have passed one or two CPA exam sections, hold a bachelor's in accounting, or have experience in adjacent roles like bookkeeping or payroll administration have a measurable edge when applying without direct tax experience.
Where can I find and apply to tax accountant jobs in Minnesota?
You can find and apply to tax accountant jobs in Minnesota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Find the roles that fit your experience and specialty, and apply directly to the ones that match.
