Tax Professional Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a tax professional job in Houston?
Houston's tax market is driven by its energy sector, so candidates with oil and gas taxation, joint venture accounting, or international transfer pricing experience stand out immediately. Focus on employers in the Energy Corridor and Downtown financial district, including major exploration and production companies, midstream operators, and the Big Four and regional CPA firms that serve them. A CPA credential combined with any energy industry exposure gives you a clear edge in this market.
Which companies hire tax professionals in Houston?
Houston tax professional roles are posted by KPMG, Weaver, and Baker Tilly Canada and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Houston's hiring mix is unusually broad, including integrated energy majors, petrochemical companies, oilfield services firms, hospital systems, and large regional accounting practices.
Are there remote tax professional jobs in Houston?
Yes, though availability depends heavily on the role. Tax compliance, tax research, and advisory work tend to be remote-friendly, while roles requiring hands-on document review or close collaboration with local finance teams lean toward in-office. About 7% of tax professional openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with energy sector corporate tax roles and national CPA firms accounting for most of those flexible positions.
How can I get a tax professional job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Houston is through a staff tax associate or tax analyst role at one of the large regional or Big Four accounting firms with offices Downtown or in Greenway Plaza, which regularly hire entry-level candidates from Texas universities. Energy companies in the Energy Corridor also take on junior tax professionals for compliance support roles. An accounting degree, exposure to federal and state income tax coursework, and familiarity with common tax software give early-career candidates a concrete advantage here.
Which industries hire the most tax professionals in Houston?
Houston tax professional roles concentrate in Accounting & Auditing, Consulting & Professional Services, and Renewable Energy, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Houston's outsized energy economy means oil, gas, and petrochemical companies generate a disproportionate share of local tax demand compared to almost any other U.S. city.
