Entry Level Technical Editor Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an entry level technical editor job?
Employers hiring at the entry level look for candidates who can demonstrate editing judgment through real samples, not just a degree. Build a portfolio with documentation you have edited or created, whether from internships, coursework, open-source projects, or volunteer work. Familiarity with style guides such as Microsoft Writing Style Guide or Chicago, plus experience in a content management system, gives new candidates a clear edge.
Which companies hire entry level technical editors?
Companies hiring entry level technical editors right now include Thomson Reuters, Nexstar Media Group, and Chewy, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hiring at this level comes from a broad mix of employers, including software companies, government contractors, healthcare organizations, and publishers that maintain large documentation or content teams.
Are there remote entry level technical editor jobs?
Yes, though availability varies by employer and industry. About 35% of entry level technical editor openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, making this one of the more flexible roles for new candidates who want to work across locations. On-site roles still make up a meaningful share, particularly at government contractors and larger enterprise employers.
Are these new grad technical editor jobs?
Yes, the listings here include new grad, recent graduate, and junior technical editor roles. A posting is new-grad friendly when it welcomes zero to two years of experience, accepts internships or academic projects as qualifying work, or asks for a portfolio rather than a long employment history. Look for language like "entry level," "junior," or "recent graduates encouraged to apply" in the job description.
Which industries hire the most entry level technical editors?
Entry Level technical editor roles concentrate in Technology & Software, Education, and Media & Entertainment, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. These sectors drive hiring at this level because they produce high volumes of documentation, user guides, compliance content, and product copy that require consistent editorial oversight, creating steady openings for candidates just starting out.
