Technical Manager Jobs in Richmond: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a technical manager job in Richmond?
Focus your search on Richmond's defense contracting firms near the Richmond area military installations, health systems such as VCU Health and Bon Secours, and the growing fintech and insurance technology companies clustered downtown and in the West End. Candidates who combine hands-on engineering or IT experience with formal project delivery credentials, such as PMP or Agile certifications, stand out locally. Networking through Richmond Technology Council events also opens doors that cold applications rarely do.
Which companies hire technical managers in Richmond?
Companies currently hiring technical managers in Richmond include Capital One, the LEGO, and WSP, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Richmond's mix of federal contractors, regional health systems, and mid-size financial technology firms means demand is spread across both the public and private sectors.
Are there remote technical manager jobs in Richmond?
Yes, though availability depends heavily on the role: technical managers overseeing hands-on infrastructure or lab environments are typically required on-site, while those managing software development or business intelligence teams have more flexibility. About 86% of technical manager openings tied to Richmond are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with the highest remote share coming from fintech and enterprise software employers in the region.
How can I get a technical manager job in Richmond with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Richmond is moving into a technical lead or senior individual contributor role first, particularly at one of the region's defense contractors or health IT vendors, which frequently hire project coordinators and team leads as stepping stones. VCU's technology programs and local bootcamp graduates are regularly recruited by Richmond's mid-size software and managed services firms. Building experience managing cross-functional projects, even informally, strengthens a candidacy considerably in this market.
