Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an AI Intern
Match your degree to the right TN category
AI Intern roles don't map to a single TN visa category. A computer science or engineering degree supports the Computer Systems Analyst or Engineer category, but a math or statistics degree may not. Confirm the fit before applying.
Request a support letter before signing
Your employer's TN support letter must describe your duties in terms that match a qualifying occupation. Ask to review it before your port-of-entry or consular appointment, not after the offer is signed.
Filter employers by recent visa filing activity
Not every tech company that hires interns has experience with work visa sponsorship. Use Migrate Mate to search AI Intern roles filtered by employers with recent visa filings, so you're targeting companies already familiar with sponsoring international talent through visa programs.
Verify Canadian credentials are in English
CBP officers at the port of entry review your degree and transcripts on the spot. Canadian credentials issued in French only will slow or stop the process. Bring certified English translations alongside your originals.
Understand Mexican applicants face a separate timeline
Mexican nationals must apply at a U.S. consulate, which adds weeks to the timeline. Schedule your consular appointment as soon as your employer finalizes the support letter, since appointment slots can be limited at peak periods.
Start the internship on your TN start date exactly
TN status is tied to the employer and start date on the I-94. Beginning work even one day before that date puts you out of status. Confirm your onboarding date matches your TN approval document before your first day.
AI Intern TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an AI Intern role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
It depends on how the role is structured. AI Intern positions that involve systems analysis, machine learning engineering, or software development typically qualify under the Computer Systems Analyst or Engineer TN categories. Roles focused on research or data science may qualify under Mathematician or Scientist, provided your degree matches. The job duties description in your employer's support letter is what CBP or the consulate evaluates, so generic intern titles alone don't determine eligibility.
How does TN compare to H-1B for AI Intern roles?
TN visa sponsorship for AI Intern roles is faster and more predictable than H-1B visa. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and Canadians can get TN status approved at a port of entry the same day. H-1B requires an annual lottery with limited slots and a months-long USCIS process. The trade-off is that TN doesn't offer a direct path to permanent residency, while H-1B visa is a dual-intent visa.
What documents does a Canadian need to get TN status at the border?
Canadian citizens applying for TN status at a port of entry need a valid Canadian passport, an employer support letter describing the qualifying role and duties, proof of the job offer including compensation terms, and evidence of their qualifying degree or credentials. Original transcripts or a credential evaluation may be requested. The CBP officer makes the determination on the spot, so completeness matters.
How do I find AI Intern jobs where the employer already knows TN sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search AI Intern roles filtered by employers with active TN visa sponsorship history. This saves significant time compared to applying broadly and discovering late in the process that a company has never sponsored a TN before. Employers already familiar with TN requirements also tend to produce accurate support letters faster.
Can a Mexican citizen get TN sponsorship for an AI Intern role, and how does the process differ?
Yes, Mexican nationals can get TN visas for qualifying AI Intern roles, but the process goes through a U.S. consulate rather than a port of entry. Mexican applicants must schedule a consular interview, which adds time to the process. There is also an annual numerical allocation for Mexican TN visas, unlike the uncapped process available to Canadian citizens. Starting the consular appointment process as early as possible after receiving an offer is the practical priority.
