Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Colorectal Surgeon
Verify your credentials meet U.S. specialty standards
Canadian and Mexican surgical training programs are generally accepted, but you'll need documentation showing residency completion and fellowship training in colorectal surgery. Gather your FRCSC or equivalent board certification before approaching U.S. employers.
Target hospitals with recent visa filing experience
Academic medical centers, large health systems, and multispecialty surgical groups are far more likely to have experience with visa sponsorship generally. Prioritize institutions with established credentialing and immigration support processes, as they typically have HR teams familiar with work authorization requirements and can more easily facilitate the TN visa support letter process for Canadian applicants or consulate applications for Mexican applicants.
Confirm your offer letter covers TN-required documentation
Your employer's offer letter must specify your job title as physician or surgeon, the specialty, your anticipated start date, and that the position requires your specific credentials. Gaps in this letter are the most common reason TN applications stall at the border.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-ready surgical roles
Search Migrate Mate to identify colorectal surgeon positions at employers with active TN sponsorship. Filtering by visa type upfront saves weeks of outreach to hospitals that won't sponsor international physicians.
Understand Mexican nationals face a TN cap
Mexican citizens are subject to a 5,500 annual TN allocation, unlike Canadians who have no cap. Apply early in the fiscal year and confirm your employer is prepared to file promptly, since processing through USCIS adds time compared to Canadian border processing.
Negotiate credentialing timelines alongside your visa timeline
U.S. hospital credentialing for surgeons typically runs 90 to 120 days separately from your TN approval. Align your expected start date with both processes so your visa approval doesn't lapse while credentialing is still pending.

Find Colorectal Surgeon JobsColorectal Surgeon TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does colorectal surgery qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Colorectal surgeons qualify under the USMCA's physician and surgeon category. You'll need a valid job offer from a U.S. employer, documentation of your surgical training and board eligibility or certification, and evidence the position requires your specific specialty. The role must be in a clinical or academic capacity, not a business or consulting function.
How does TN compare to H-1B for colorectal surgeons?
TN is generally faster and more predictable for colorectal surgeons than H-1B. There's no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and Canadian citizens can obtain TN status at the border the same day with the right documents. H-1B requires a full petition process, a lottery selection, and months of USCIS adjudication. For Canadian surgeons with a firm offer, TN is usually the more practical first step.
Can Mexican colorectal surgeons use the TN visa?
Yes, but with additional steps. Mexican nationals must file a TN petition with USCIS rather than applying at the border, and they're subject to the 5,500 annual cap. Applications also require an approved petition before the visa interview at a U.S. consulate in Mexico. Filing early in the fiscal year reduces the risk of hitting the cap before your petition is processed.
Where can I find colorectal surgeon jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN and other work visa job searches. You can filter by visa type to surface colorectal surgeon roles at employers who have already sponsored TN professionals, which removes the guesswork of cold outreach. Most general platforms don't filter by sponsorship type, so you end up screening dozens of listings manually.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for my TN application?
Your employer needs to provide a detailed offer letter on company letterhead that specifies your title, specialty, employment start date, and a statement that the position requires your surgical credentials. You'll also need your own credential documents, including medical degree, residency completion certificate, fellowship certificate, and board eligibility or certification confirmation. Canadian applicants present these at the port of entry; Mexican nationals submit them with the USCIS petition.
