- Stay updated on advancements in digital control technologies and controllers.
- Validate design concepts through both computer simulations and hands-on laboratory testing.
- Create automated test cases for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) modelling and testing, where applicable.
- Perform board bring-up activities and develop device drivers for communication protocols such as CAN, I2C, and SPI.
- Contribute to specification development, participate in design reviews, and carry out unit testing.
- Ensure a thorough understanding of safety and regulatory requirements for power converters used in fast charging applications.
- Guarantee compliance with relevant regulatory and safety standards, including UL, IEC, and SAE.
Requirements
- 6+ years of proven experience developing Power Electronics products
- 6+ years of programming experience in C/C++, Assembly for 32-bit controllers, DSP, and Python for scripting and automation
- Demonstrated experience implementing control code for power converters without relying on code generation tools.
- Strong experience in designing controllers (such as PI, PR, droop, etc.), modelling, and simulation using tools such as PLECS, MATLAB, and Simulink, as well as lab tests.
- Extensive background in designing FW that requires accurate timing within a real-time programming environment, including PLL, timers, PWMs, etc.
- Strong experience in developing algorithms for harmonics cancellation using feedback approaches.
- Solid background in developing embedded firmware for real-time systems using C/C++.
- Strong grasp of power electronics principles, including control techniques for inverters, rectifiers, and DC-DC converters (LLC, CLLC, DAB, PFC chargers, DC/DC, inverters, etc.).
- Experience working with grid-tie inverter systems (solar, BESS, EVSE, etc.).
- Solid hands-on experience in high-power labs, with the ability to debug hardware issues related to firmware functions in power converters.
- Skilled in programming microcontrollers and using peripherals like timers, PWM, interrupts, GPIOs, ADC, UART, I2C, SPI, CAN, and Ethernet; experience with TI C2000 DSP family is a plus.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship in Firmware
Align your degree to the role description
TN visa classification for firmware work hinges on your degree matching the job title. A Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering degree maps cleanly. A general IT degree may not, so confirm the alignment before applying.
Target employers with embedded systems teams
Firmware roles at companies building hardware products, medical devices, or industrial controls are more likely to require dedicated firmware engineers and understand TN sponsorship requirements than generalist software shops.
Ask employers to scope the role correctly
Job descriptions that blend firmware with general software duties can complicate TN classification. Request that your offer letter and support letter specifically describe firmware development, embedded systems, and hardware-software integration responsibilities.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-ready employers
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers actively hiring firmware engineers under TN sponsorship. Targeting companies that have filed TN support letters before cuts the negotiation time on visa logistics significantly.
Canadians: prepare your port-of-entry package thoroughly
Canadian citizens present their TN application directly to CBP at the border or airport. Bring your signed offer letter, degree transcripts, and a detailed support letter covering your firmware duties, reporting structure, and employment period.
Firmware TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a firmware engineer role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, firmware engineering roles typically qualify under the Computer Systems Analyst or Engineer category in the USMCA TN classification list. The key is that your job duties must center on embedded systems, hardware-software integration, or low-level software development, and your degree must align with the specific category your employer uses in the support letter.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for firmware engineers?
TN is faster and simpler for firmware engineers than H-1B. Canadian citizens can be approved at a port of entry the same day, with no lottery, no USCIS petition, and no annual cap. Mexican citizens apply at a U.S. consulate, which takes longer, but still avoid the H-1B lottery. TN status renews indefinitely as long as you hold a qualifying job offer.
What documents does a firmware engineer need for TN entry?
You'll need a valid Canadian or Mexican passport, a signed employer offer letter specifying your firmware role and employment terms, a detailed support letter describing your duties and qualifications, and your degree transcripts or diploma. If your degree is from a non-U.S. institution, bring the original documentation. CBP officers may ask technical questions about your role, so be prepared to explain your day-to-day firmware responsibilities.
Where can I find firmware jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically to connect Canadian and Mexican professionals with U.S. employers offering TN visa sponsorship. Firmware roles are listed with details on visa support, so you're not spending time on applications where sponsorship isn't available. Filtering by role type helps you quickly identify embedded systems and hardware-focused positions open to TN candidates.
Can I switch firmware employers while on TN status?
Yes, but you need a new TN authorization before starting with the new employer. Canadians can get a new TN at the port of entry with a fresh offer letter and support letter from the incoming company. Mexican citizens need to apply for a new TN visa at a U.S. consulate. Don't start work with the new employer until the new TN is approved, as TN status is employer-specific.
