Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Systems Programmer
Align your credentials to systems-level work
TN classification for Systems Programmer requires a degree in computer science, engineering, or a directly related field. A general IT degree paired with unrelated work history raises CBP scrutiny, so document how your academic background maps to low-level programming, OS internals, or embedded systems.
Target employers with government contract histories
Federal contractors and defense-adjacent tech firms routinely sponsor TN visas for Systems Programmers because their work requires U.S.-based specialists. These employers already understand the filing process and are less likely to stall at the offer stage over TN paperwork complexity.
Get your offer letter to specify systems work explicitly
CBP officers assess the job description in your offer letter, not your job title alone. Push your employer to list duties like kernel development, firmware engineering, or real-time OS programming so the letter maps cleanly to the USMCA Systems Programmer occupation category.
Search verified TN-sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Systems Programmer roles by employers with recent visa filings, saving you from cold-applying to companies without experience sponsoring work visas who may push back when you raise visa requirements in the interview process.
Prepare for same-day admission as a Canadian national
Canadian citizens can present TN documentation directly at a U.S. land port of entry or preclearance airport and receive admission the same day. Bring your degree, offer letter, and any supporting employment verification so CBP can adjudicate on the spot without a consular appointment.
Mexican nationals should start DS-160 filing early
Unlike Canadians, Mexican nationals must apply through a U.S. consulate and schedule a visa interview, which adds several weeks to the timeline. Start the DS-160 and consular appointment process as soon as your employer countersigns the offer to avoid start-date delays.

Find Systems Programmer JobsSystems Programmer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Systems Programmer role actually qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, Systems Programmer is a listed occupation in the USMCA TN visa schedule. To qualify, your role must involve specialized programming at the systems level, such as OS development, firmware, or embedded software. Generic software development positions sometimes face CBP pushback, so your offer letter should specifically describe systems-level duties rather than general coding work.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Systems Programmer jobs?
For Canadian nationals, TN is significantly faster than H-1B because there is no lottery, no annual cap, and no USCIS petition to file. Admission happens at the port of entry, often the same day. H-1B requires a lottery selection that caps the pool at 85,000 each fiscal year, with results taking months. For most Canadian Systems Programmers with a qualifying degree, TN is the more practical path.
Where can I find Systems Programmer jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists Systems Programmer roles specifically filtered for TN visa sponsorship, so you can focus on employers who have already committed to supporting the USMCA filing process. Searching broadly and raising visa requirements late in interviews wastes time with employers unfamiliar with TN documentation requirements.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for my TN filing?
Your employer must provide a detailed offer letter on company letterhead that states your job title, a description of systems-level duties, your salary, the employment period, and confirmation of your professional status. For Canadian nationals presenting at a port of entry, no advance USCIS filing is required. Mexican nationals additionally need the employer's support for a consular appointment package.
Can I change employers after starting work on a TN visa as a Systems Programmer?
You can change employers, but your TN status is tied to your current employer. You cannot start work for a new employer under your existing TN. Canadian nationals can apply for a new TN at a port of entry with the new employer's documentation, while Mexican nationals must apply for a new TN visa at a U.S. consulate before beginning work with the new company.
