Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship in IT Programmer
Align your degree to the role description
TN visa classification requires your degree field to match the IT Programmer job duties. A computer science or engineering degree maps cleanly, but an unrelated degree paired with programming experience won't satisfy CBP's specialty occupation standard at the border.
Target employers with recent visa filing experience
Search for employers with recent visa filings for IT Programmer or software developer roles. Employers experienced with visa sponsorship understand the work visa process and won't treat your status as a blocker.
Request a support letter before you travel
Canadian citizens apply at the port of entry, so your employer must provide a detailed support letter describing your duties, salary, and TN classification before you cross. A vague letter is the most common reason CBP denies admission.
Confirm your employer's E-Verify enrollment status
Employers must be enrolled in E-Verify to legally employ TN workers. Ask during the offer stage, not after signing. If the employer isn't enrolled, they need to register with USCIS before your start date.
Use Migrate Mate to find IT Programmer jobs with TN sponsorship
Most job postings don't advertise TN sponsorship directly. Migrate Mate filters roles by visa sponsorship type so you're only seeing IT Programmer positions at employers who actively support TN status, saving you time on outreach that goes nowhere.
Plan your Mexican TN application through a U.S. consulate
Mexican citizens can't apply at the port of entry like Canadians. You'll need a consular appointment at a U.S. embassy or consulate in Mexico, so build two to four weeks of lead time into your start date negotiation.
IT Programmer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an IT Programmer role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, provided your job duties align with programming and software development functions covered under the USMCA's Computer Systems Analyst or Engineer categories. CBP evaluates the actual duties, not just the title, so your employer's support letter must describe specific programming responsibilities. Roles that involve general IT support without a coding or systems development focus may face scrutiny.
How does TN compare to H-1B for IT Programmer jobs?
TN has no annual cap and no lottery, so Canadians can get status at the border the same day an offer is accepted. H-1B visa requires entering a lottery in March with results in April and a start date no earlier than October 1. For IT Programmers with a qualifying USMCA degree, TN is almost always faster and carries less uncertainty than H-1B sponsorship.
Where can I find IT Programmer jobs that sponsor TN visas?
Standard job postings rarely specify TN sponsorship. Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface IT Programmer roles at employers with recent visa filings, so you're not guessing or filtering manually. Searching by visa type and role cuts down on outreach to employers who aren't experienced with work visa sponsorship.
Can I switch IT Programmer jobs while on TN status?
Yes, but you can't start with the new employer until your new TN status is approved. Canadians can apply at the border with a new support letter from the incoming employer. Mexican citizens need a new consular appointment. There's no grace period between employers, so coordinate your end date and new TN approval carefully before giving notice.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer must supply a signed support letter on company letterhead stating your job title, duties, salary, intended period of employment, and confirmation that the role qualifies under USMCA. If you're Canadian, you'll present this support letter at the U.S. border or port of entry. If you're Mexican, you'll submit it with your visa application at a U.S. consulate. The support letter is the key document for TN visa approval—there is no government labor certification or prevailing wage requirement involved.
