The research will also involve identifying solutions gaps where technologies are lacking or have not scaled; and water systems analysis, technology assessment, and development policy, with direct relevance to evidence-based decision-making by governments, investors, and international development organizations working on agricultural water security. Will work closely with J-WAFS staff and collaborators including an international network of partner institutions.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED:
- PhD in water systems, environmental engineering, agricultural development, development engineering, or related fields
- Proven experience in conducting high-quality research in the context of water or agricultural systems or a related area
- Experience with technology assessment, policy synthesis, or evidence review
- Excellent writing and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate research effectively to non-academic audiences
- Ability to work independently as well as in multidisciplinary collaborations
- Track record of applying systems thinking, particularly in the context of water and agriculture systems
- Understanding of the barriers and enablers for new innovations to be implemented and adopted at scale, particularly in agriculture
- Strong analytical, statistical, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to engage with relevant stakeholders outside of academia, including from government, NGOs, and the private sector
PREFERRED:
- Experience with technology design, innovation, implementation, or regulatory pathways
- Knowledge of water and agricultural systems, policies, and ethics in a global context
Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, two written samples relevant to the topic, a brief note (maximum 1 page) outlining how they would approach this research and contact information for three references. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Postdoctoral Associate
Translate your research credentials for U.S. reviewers
Canadian and Mexican doctoral degrees are accepted for TN purposes, but your CV should explicitly list your Ph.D. conferral date, institution, and field. Border officers and HR reviewers need to confirm your degree matches the scientific research category without extra digging.
Target institutions with active OFLC disclosure records
Search for universities and national labs with recent visa filing histories to identify sponsors experienced with work visa sponsorship for postdoctoral roles in your field. A pattern of prior visa sponsorships signals an employer familiar with hiring international researchers and navigating visa requirements for specialized positions.
Request a formal offer letter before your border appointment
Canadian applicants presenting at a port of entry need a detailed employer letter describing your research duties, the scientific category you qualify under, your appointment term, and compensation structure. A vague offer letter is one of the most common reasons CBP officers request additional documentation.
Confirm your institution enrolls in E-Verify before accepting
Federal funding requirements mean many universities already use E-Verify, which simplifies your I-9 process on day one. Ask the postdoc office or HR coordinator directly, since not every department within a large institution handles employment verification the same way.
Use Migrate Mate to filter postdoctoral roles by employer visa experience
Search Migrate Mate to identify institutions with recent visa filings and experience sponsoring work visas in research roles. Filtering by employers experienced with visa sponsorship helps you focus on institutions familiar with postdoctoral appointment structures and work visa processes.
Negotiate your appointment term to match renewal cycles
TN status is granted in increments of up to three years and is renewable indefinitely. If your postdoc offer is for one year with expected renewal, ask your department to issue a three-year appointment letter upfront, which avoids an early status renewal and keeps your research timeline uninterrupted.

Find Postdoctoral Associate JobsPostdoctoral Associate TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Postdoctoral Associate role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, postdoctoral research positions can qualify under the TN visa's Scientific Technician/Technologist or Scientific Research categories, depending on your duties and field. Your offer letter must specifically describe your research activities and link your doctoral degree to those duties. Roles that are primarily teaching-focused without a research component may require closer review by a CBP officer or consular officer.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Postdoctoral Associate positions?
The TN visa has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no lengthy USCIS adjudication period. Canadians can receive TN status at a port of entry the same day. H-1B requires a lottery selection, USCIS processing of at least several months, and an annual cap of 85,000 slots. For postdocs on fixed appointment timelines, TN's speed and predictability are practical advantages the H-1B process cannot match.
What documents does a postdoctoral employer need to prepare for TN sponsorship?
Your sponsoring institution needs to provide a signed offer letter on institutional letterhead that states your job title, a description of your research duties, the USMCA professional category your role falls under, your appointment start and end dates, and your compensation. This letter serves as your primary documentation for TN status. HR offices at research-intensive universities typically have templates for this offer letter. For Canadian citizens, you'll present this letter at the U.S. port of entry; for Mexican citizens, you'll submit it as part of your consulate visa application.
Where can I find Postdoctoral Associate jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN visa job seekers and filters postdoctoral openings by sponsorship history. This saves you from applying to positions at institutions that have never filed for TN status in research roles. Filtering by institution type, field, and location gives you a practical shortlist of sponsors already familiar with the USMCA treaty process.
Can Mexican citizens get TN status for Postdoctoral Associate roles, and how does the process differ?
Mexican citizens qualify for TN status under the same USMCA categories as Canadians, but they must apply at a U.S. consulate in Mexico rather than at the border. The consular interview requires the same employer documentation, plus a valid DS-160 application and appointment at a U.S. embassy or consulate. Processing times depend on consulate workload and appointment availability, so applying well before your intended start date is important.
