Verify your degree aligns with the role
TN visa approval under the Engineer category requires a degree in biomedical engineering or a closely related field. A general biology or chemistry degree paired with a biomedical job title raises CBP scrutiny, so confirm the match before applying.
Target hospitals and medical device manufacturers first
Healthcare systems, FDA-regulated device companies, and research institutions file TN support letters regularly. These employers already understand the documentation requirements, which shortens the offer-to-start timeline compared to first-time TN sponsors.
Request a detailed support letter from your employer
The offer letter must specify your TN Engineer classification, the biomedical nature of the role, your qualifying degree, and the employment duration. Missing any of these elements can result in a CBP denial even when the job clearly qualifies.
Understand Mexican nationals face a separate process
Mexican citizens cannot use port-of-entry processing like Canadians. You must schedule a consular interview at a U.S. embassy in Mexico and factor in appointment wait times, which can add several weeks to your start date planning.
Use Migrate Mate to find experienced visa sponsors
Searching broadly wastes time on employers unfamiliar with visa sponsorship. Migrate Mate filters biomedical roles by employers with recent visa filings, so you're targeting companies already experienced with hiring sponsored workers.
Prepare for CBP questions about specialty occupation scope
At the port of entry, Canadian applicants should be ready to explain how their daily duties, not just the job title, require a biomedical engineering background. Bring your degree transcripts and any professional credentials to support that connection.
Biomedical TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Biomedical role qualify for a TN visa?
Yes, biomedical engineers qualify under the TN Engineer category, provided the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in biomedical engineering or a closely related field. Job titles like biomedical equipment technician or clinical support specialist may not qualify unless the role genuinely requires engineering-level knowledge and your degree reflects that specialization.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Biomedical professionals?
TN has no annual lottery and no numerical cap for Canadian citizens, meaning you can start a qualifying biomedical role at any time of year. H-1B visa selection is lottery-based, and most applicants wait over a year from registration to employment authorization. Mexican TN applicants face consular processing timelines but still avoid the H-1B lottery entirely.
What documents does a Biomedical TN applicant need?
You need a detailed employer support letter specifying the TN Engineer classification, a description of your biomedical duties, your qualifying degree information, and the employment term. Bring your original degree transcripts or a credential evaluation, your passport, and the support letter to the port of entry if you're Canadian, or to your consular interview if you're Mexican.
Where can I find Biomedical jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN visa job seekers and filters biomedical roles by employers with recent visa filings and experience managing work visa sponsorship. That means you spend less time cold-applying to companies unfamiliar with visa sponsorship and more time engaging employers who are already equipped to support your TN application process.
Can I renew my TN visa if I stay in the same Biomedical role?
Yes. TN status is granted in increments of up to three years and can be renewed indefinitely as long as you maintain a qualifying employer relationship and the role continues to meet TN Engineer criteria. Renewals require a new employer support letter and are processed either at the port of entry for Canadians or through USCIS for both nationalities if you prefer status-based renewal.
