INTRODUCTION
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Researcher - Ultrafast Science within the Atomic, Molecular and Optical Sciences (AMOS) group in the Chemical Sciences Division. This position will investigate the dynamics of ionized and excited molecules using extreme ultraviolet and X-ray photons and imaging techniques such as COLd Target Recoil Ion Momentum Spectroscopy (COLTRIMS)/Reaction Microscopy (REMI).
The AMOS group addresses fundamental questions in atomic, molecular, and chemical sciences using state-of-the-art tools such as free electron lasers, laboratory-based extreme ultraviolet ultrafast laser sources, synchrotrons, and electron beams, combined with advanced electron, ion, and photon detection techniques. Together with cutting-edge theory, we explore molecular physics and chemistry across a wide range of energies and timescales.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
-
Conduct research on energy- and time-resolved electronic and nuclear dynamics of excited molecules through analysis of multi-particle coincidence 3D momentum imaging list-mode data.
-
Lead collaborative projects investigating molecular dynamics and correlation effects using synchrotron radiation (e.g., PETRA-III, MAX-IV) and X-ray free electron lasers (e.g., LCLS-II, EuXFEL).
-
Participate in tabletop high harmonic generation experiments and 3D momentum spectroscopy using electron-ion coincidence techniques in a dedicated laser laboratory.
-
Prepare high-quality manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and contribute to beamtime proposals and progress reports.
-
Present research in group meetings and at national and international conferences.
-
Maintain high safety standards in our research labs, accurate data records, and infrastructure supporting group research.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
-
Ph.D. in Experimental Chemistry or Physics.
-
Experience in COLTRIMS/REMI or velocity map imaging.
-
Proficiency in analyzing multidimensional list-mode data sets and simulating COLTRIMS/REMI experiments.
-
Experience with complex high-vacuum chambers containing electron and ion spectrometers and EUV optics.
-
Experience in data acquisition (e.g., COBOLD, LabVIEW), programming (e.g., Fortran, C++, Matlab, Python), and momentum spectroscopy.
-
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative research environment and communicate results clearly.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
-
Mentor and guide students, interns, and coworkers.
-
Support research activities of other team members.
-
Keep detailed experimental records and communicate results to the group and PI on a weekly basis.
-
Experience with ultrafast laser operation, chirped pulse amplification, pulse shaping and compression, optical parametric amplification, and high harmonic generation.
-
Engineering skills in vacuum, optics, electronics, or computing.
-
Demonstrated ability to convey results through well-written and concise documentation.
-
Strong interpersonal skills to interact with members of a large multidisciplinary research team.
-
Well versed in giving presentations about science and technique.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
-
Application date: Priority consideration will be given to candidates who apply by March 31, 2026. Applications will be accepted until the job posting is removed.
-
Appointment type: This is a full-time 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
-
Salary range: This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. The salary range for this position is $69,084 - $82,836 and is expected to start at $69,084 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.
-
Background check: This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
-

Align your credentials to TN categories
TN visa classification for Research roles hinges on your degree field matching the work performed. A chemistry degree supporting a biochemistry research role clears adjudication cleanly. A general science degree supporting a specialized AI research role often triggers follow-up questions at the port of entry.
Request a support letter before applying
Your employer's support letter must specify that the role requires a bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific discipline. Officers deny TN Research entries when the letter describes duties without explicitly connecting the academic requirement to the position. Ask your HR contact to include both elements.
Target universities and federal contractors first
Universities and federally funded research institutions file TN sponsorship for Research professionals regularly and have established processes. Government contractors supporting NIH, NSF, or DOE-funded projects are accustomed to the TN documentation requirements and move faster than employers new to the process.
Clarify Mexican TN processing before accepting offers
Mexican citizens must process TN visas at a U.S. consulate, which adds weeks to your start date. Before accepting an offer, confirm your employer understands consular processing timelines so your onboarding date is set realistically and USCIS or consular delays don't create a breach of your employment agreement.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsoring employers
Searching for Research employers experienced with visa sponsorship takes time without the right filter. Migrate Mate surfaces companies with recent visa filings for Research roles, so you spend your applications on employers already set up to handle work visa sponsorship under USMCA.
Prepare documentation for Canadian border processing
Canadian citizens can secure TN status at a port of entry in a single day if documentation is complete. Bring your degree transcripts, employer support letter, and proof of Canadian citizenship. Missing any one document means turning back, so verify the full package before you travel.
Research TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Research job qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, Research roles qualify under the TN visa category when the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific, social science, or technical field. The job duties must reflect professional-level research work rather than technician or assistant-level tasks. Your employer's support letter must make that distinction explicitly to avoid denial at adjudication.
How does TN visa sponsorship for Research compare to H-1B?
TN visa sponsorship for Research roles is faster and more predictable than H-1B visa. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and Canadians can get status approved at a port of entry the same day. H-1B selection is luck-based and takes months. The tradeoff is that TN doesn't lead to permanent residence on its own, while H-1B is dual-intent.
Where can I find Research employers who sponsor TN visas?
Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface employers with active TN visa sponsorship history for Research roles. Rather than filtering general job boards and guessing at sponsorship willingness, Migrate Mate shows you companies already equipped to hire Canadian and Mexican research professionals under USMCA, which reduces application time and rejection from employers unfamiliar with TN.
Can a Mexican citizen get TN sponsorship for a Research role?
Yes, Mexican citizens are eligible for TN sponsorship in Research occupations, but the process differs from Canadian citizens. Mexicans must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate rather than at a port of entry. Consular processing typically takes several weeks, so your offer letter and start date need to account for that timeline before you accept a position.
What happens to my TN status if my Research contract ends early?
Your TN status is tied to the specific employer and role listed on your approval. If your research contract ends before your TN expiration date, you have a 60-day grace period under USCIS rules to find a new qualifying position or prepare to depart. A new employer requires a new TN filing, and you can't simply transfer your existing status to a different research institution.
