About us:
The people of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) are united by a singular mission: ending cancer for life. Our specialized care teams provide personalized, compassionate, expert care to patients of all ages. Informed by basic research done at our Sloan Kettering Institute, scientists across MSK collaborate to conduct innovative translational and clinical research that is driving a revolution in our understanding of cancer as a disease and improving the ability to prevent, diagnose, and treat it. MSK is dedicated to training the next generation of scientists and clinicians, who go on to pursue our mission at MSK and around the globe.
Exciting Opportunity at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center: Join the A. Ari Hakimi Lab as a Research Technician!
The Hakimi Lab at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center studies the immune and metabolic regulation of the renal cell carcinoma (RCC) microenvironment, to uncover critical mechanisms and biomarkers of response to current systemic therapies that include immune checkpoint blockade and angiogenesis-targeted therapies. We are a highly translationally-minded lab with combined expertise that effectively bridges clinical and preclinical research. We collaborate widely on interests in T cell biology under immune checkpoint blockade therapy, CAR-T cell engineering, as well as genomic and epidemiological (sex and obesity) drivers of immuno-metabolic dysregulation in cancer. Our lab also engineers novel mouse models of RCC that more accurately reflect the genomic profiles of human kidney cancer, providing important tools for the study of heterogenous RCC subtypes in mice with fully functional immune systems. A new hire would work flexibly alongside other research technicians to expand our internal human biobank with a focus on processing fresh surgical specimens for cutting edge omic technologies, as well as maintaining our genetically engineered mouse colonies for experimentation. Our lab is committed to fostering a rich learning environment, thus there will be an opportunity for the successful candidate to nurture an independent research project under postdoc mentorship. The new hire will be expected to master many in vitro and in vivo techniques and will receive broad training and mentorship at the forefront of translational medicine. Due to these training efforts, we require a minimum 2 year commitment.
Role Overview:
- Techniques & Assays: Conduct common and specialized assays including mammalian cell culture, organoid culture, mouse genotyping using DNA electrophoresis, western blotting, flow cytometry processing, sorting and acquisition, human and mouse tissue processing for single cell RNA-sequencing, PBMC isolation and cryopreservation, CRISPR/cas9 genome engineering, cell counting.
- Animal Handling: Conduct animal studies, including mouse handling, breeding, injections (intraperitoneal, intravenous, subcutaneous), kidney ultrasound imaging, animal autopsies, tissue and blood collection. Potential for mouse renal injection surgical training.
- Laboratory Support: Prepare and maintain lab equipment, instruments, solutions, and other essential supplies.
- Data Management: Record and analyze research data, prepare reports, and provide updates to the research team in lab meetings.
- Collaboration: Assist peers and researchers with ongoing projects, fostering a team-oriented, supportive environment.
Key Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in biology/life sciences.
- Basic laboratory skills.
- Comfort working with animals.
Core Skills:
- Attention to detail and strong record-keeping habits.
- Ability to follow protocols while troubleshooting when needed.
- Team-oriented approach to supporting postdocs and fellow researchers.
- Adaptability in a dynamic lab environment.
Additional Information:
- Location: NYC; Zuckerman Research Center
- Schedule: 37.5 hours per week (onsite)
Pay Range: $26.77 - $40.05
FSLA Status: Non-Exempt

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Research Technician
Document the theoretical link to your degree
TN officers scrutinize whether your science or engineering degree directly supports your lab technician duties. Prepare a credential summary that maps your coursework to specific research methods you'll use on the job.
Target employers with active federal research contracts
Universities, national laboratories, and pharmaceutical companies with federal grants routinely sponsor TN visas because their compliance teams already handle foreign national workers. Look for employers with recent visa filings in your field—this track record shows they have experience sponsoring work visas and understand the sponsorship process.
Request a support letter before your border crossing
Canadian applicants often underestimate how much a detailed employer support letter matters at the port of entry. Get a letter that names your exact job title, the scientific field, your degree, and your start date before you travel.
Search for TN-ready roles using Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters Research Technician openings by employers with recent visa filings, saving you from applying to labs that lack experience with work visa sponsorship. Use it to target roles where visa sponsorship infrastructure is already in place.
Clarify your specific subdiscipline in the job offer
A generic 'Research Technician' title can raise questions at a U.S. consulate for Mexican applicants. Ask your employer to specify the scientific discipline in the offer letter, such as biochemistry research technician or materials science technician, to align with USCIS's Scientific Technician category.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before your first day
Some federally funded research institutions are legally required to use E-Verify. Confirm your employer's enrollment status during the offer stage so your I-9 and TN status verification are processed without delays on day one.

Find Research Technician JobsResearch Technician TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Research Technician role qualify for a TN visa?
Yes, Research Technician positions qualify under the USMCA's Scientific Technician/Technologist category. The role must require theoretical knowledge of a natural science, chemistry, biology, or a related engineering discipline, and your degree must align with the specific scientific work in the job offer. General lab assistant roles without a clear scientific theory component may not qualify.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Research Technician jobs?
The TN visa has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadians, so you can start as soon as an employer extends an offer. The H-1B requires winning a random lottery held once a year, and most applicants wait 12 to 18 months before starting work. For research technician roles at universities or labs, TN is almost always faster and more predictable.
Where can I find Research Technician jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search Research Technician openings filtered by employers with recent visa filings, so you're not cold-applying to labs with no experience managing work visa sponsorship. Most standard job boards don't filter by visa type, which means you can spend weeks applying before discovering an employer lacks familiarity with the sponsorship process.
Can a Mexican citizen get TN status for a Research Technician role at the border like a Canadian?
No. Mexican citizens must apply at a U.S. consulate in Mexico and receive a TN visa stamp before entering, rather than requesting TN status directly at the border. The consulate interview process requires the same documentation as Canadian applicants, including the employer support letter, degree credentials, and a detailed description of your research duties.
What happens to my TN status if my research grant ends or my employer loses funding?
Your TN status is tied to that specific employer and position. If the role ends, your authorized status ends with it. You have a 60-day grace period to find a new qualifying employer, transfer to a different visa category, or depart the U.S. Start your job search immediately if funding changes are announced, and notify USCIS if you secure a new TN-qualifying offer.
