We are seeking candidates that will help define what’s next for agricultural education and communication. This tenure-track faculty position within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University is an opportunity to build and lead a nationally recognized program exploring how artificial intelligence and machine learning can transform the way students learn, educators teach, and agricultural communities access knowledge. Through research, Extension, and teaching, this role will shape innovative approaches that strengthen learning experiences and advance agricultural and food systems education for the future.
In this role, you will get to explore emerging technologies in ways that create meaningful, real-world impact. From designing personalized learning experiences to supporting producers, educators, and stakeholders through technology-driven solutions, your work will influence both the future of education and the future of agriculture. You will also have the flexibility to pursue bold ideas, build collaborative partnerships, mentor students, and create programs that extend beyond the classroom into communities across North Carolina and beyond.
Key Responsibilities:
Establish and lead a forward-thinking research program exploring the use of AI and ML in agricultural and Extension education, including areas such as personalized learning, predictive analytics, adaptive assessments, virtual assistants, and emerging educational technologies.
Develop innovative approaches that enhance communication and learning outcomes for students, agricultural professionals, producers, and community stakeholders.
Design and deliver impactful Extension programming that helps agricultural and food systems organizations understand, adopt, and apply AI-driven technologies and tools.
Create hands-on workshops, trainings, and educational resources focused on topics such as data-informed decision making, AI applications in agriculture, and technology integration strategies.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary faculty, research centers, strategic initiatives, and external partners to advance applied AI efforts across agriculture and life sciences.
Develop technology-enhanced teaching and learning experiences that prepare future educators, Extension professionals, and agricultural leaders to effectively integrate emerging technologies into their work.
Teach and contribute to undergraduate and graduate programs related to agricultural and Extension education, communication, and technology applications.
Mentor and advise graduate students while supporting student research, innovation, and professional development.
Conduct scholarly and translational research that bridges theory, practice, and community impact across teaching, Extension, and applied research initiatives.
Secure external funding and build partnerships that expand the reach and impact of AI and ML initiatives within agriculture and food systems.
Contribute to departmental, college, university, and professional service activities that support the broader mission of CALS and the agricultural community.
This 12-month appointment includes responsibilities across Research (50%), Extension (30%), and Teaching (20%).

Verify your credential matches the TN category
Agriculture is a broad field, but TN visa eligibility is narrow. Confirm your degree and job duties align with a recognized USMCA category like agronomist or animal scientist before applying to roles.
Target employers with existing agricultural research infrastructure
Universities, USDA-affiliated research stations, and large agribusiness operations are more likely to have HR teams familiar with TN sponsorship. Seek roles tied to R&D or technical programs rather than seasonal field work.
Get your credentials assessed before crossing the border
Canadians presenting at a port of entry have one shot to make their case to a CBP officer. Prepare a credential evaluation letter showing your degree maps to the specific TN occupation listed in your offer letter.
Ask the employer to frame duties using USMCA language
Your job offer letter must describe duties consistent with a qualifying professional occupation. Generic titles like 'farm manager' won't qualify. Ensure the letter specifies technical responsibilities tied to life sciences, agronomy, or animal health.
Search TN-eligible agriculture roles through Migrate Mate
Finding employers who actively support TN sponsorship in agriculture is harder than in tech. Migrate Mate filters job listings by TN eligibility so you're not guessing which employers will engage with USMCA-based work authorization.
Plan around Mexican nationals' annual TN cap
Unlike Canadians, Mexican nationals are subject to a 5,500 annual TN allocation and must obtain a visa at a U.S. consulate. Apply early in the fiscal year, as consulate appointment availability varies significantly by location.
Agriculture TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
What agriculture jobs actually qualify for TN visa status?
The USMCA TN category recognizes a limited set of agriculture-related professions: agronomist, animal breeder, animal scientist, apiculturist, horticulturalist, plant breeder, poultry scientist, and soil scientist, among others. General farming, crop harvesting, and field labor roles do not qualify. Your job duties must reflect a professional or scientific function tied to your degree.
How does TN compare to H-1B for agriculture professionals?
TN is almost always the better path for agriculture professionals from Canada or Mexico. There is no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no employer sponsorship petition required with USCIS. H-1B visa subjects you to a random selection process with roughly a one-in-four chance. TN can be secured at a port of entry or consulate within days of receiving a qualifying job offer.
Can I use Migrate Mate to find agriculture employers who understand TN sponsorship?
Yes. Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN visa job seekers and filters roles by USMCA eligibility. Agriculture sponsorship can be harder to identify than in other fields because many ag employers haven't documented their TN history publicly. Migrate Mate surfaces opportunities where TN sponsorship is already part of the hiring conversation.
What documents do I need when applying for TN status as an agriculture professional?
You'll need a job offer letter from your U.S. employer that identifies the TN category, describes your professional duties, states the employment duration, and confirms it's a prearranged position. You'll also need proof of citizenship and your academic credentials. Canadian citizens present these at the border; Mexican nationals submit them at a U.S. consulate for a visa stamp.
Can a soil scientist or agronomist working for a Canadian employer get TN status for cross-border projects?
TN status requires employment by a U.S. entity, not a Canadian or Mexican employer sending you on assignment. If you're being brought in as a consultant through a Canadian firm, the work arrangement must still meet USMCA professional service requirements, and you'd need to demonstrate a clear employer-employee or client relationship with the U.S. party.
