Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Sonographer
Verify your RDMS credential meets TN standards
TN officers expect sonographers to hold RDMS certification from ARDMS or equivalent. Confirm your credential is current before applying, since an expired or inactive certification can result in a denial at the port of entry.
Target hospital systems with imaging departments
Hospitals, outpatient imaging centers, and cardiology practices are the most active TN sponsors for sonographers. Search specifically for facilities advertising open sonography positions, not general allied health roles, to find employers already familiar with the TN process.
Request a support letter covering your specific modality
Your employer's TN support letter must name your exact specialty, such as vascular, cardiac, or obstetric sonography. A generic letter describing diagnostic imaging broadly gives border officers less to work with and can invite additional scrutiny.
Clarify TN status with travel-heavy locum employers
Locum tenens and per diem sonography positions involve frequent facility changes, which can complicate TN status if your letter names one fixed work site. Confirm with your employer that the letter reflects all anticipated work locations or accounts for multi-site assignments.
Search TN-specific listings through Migrate Mate
Most general job boards don't filter by visa sponsorship type. Use Migrate Mate to find sonographer roles where employers have confirmed TN sponsorship, saving you from pursuing positions that require H-1B or employer immigration counsel unfamiliar with TN.
Prepare Canadian credential equivalency documentation
If your sonography degree is from a Canadian institution, carry official transcripts and, if applicable, a credential evaluation showing equivalency to a U.S. associate or bachelor's degree in the field. CBP officers may ask for this alongside your ARDMS certification.

Find Sonographer JobsSonographer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the sonographer occupation officially qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Sonographers are recognized under the USMCA's allied health professional category when the role requires specialized postsecondary training in diagnostic medical sonography. You'll need a degree or diploma in the field and typically an ARDMS credential. The job offer must specify a sonography role, not a general radiology or imaging technologist position, for the classification to apply cleanly.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for sonographers?
TN is faster and has no lottery. Canadian sonographers can apply at a U.S. port of entry and begin work the same day. H-1B requires employer sponsorship months in advance, entry into an annual lottery with no guaranteed selection, and USCIS adjudication that can take several months. For sonographers who qualify under USMCA, TN is typically the more practical path to U.S. employment.
What documents does a Canadian sonographer need at the border for TN admission?
You need a valid Canadian passport, an employer support letter on company letterhead that describes your sonographer role and confirms it's temporary, proof of your sonography degree or diploma, and your RDMS or equivalent certification. CBP officers may also ask for transcripts or a credential evaluation if your training institution is unfamiliar to them.
How can I find sonographer jobs with confirmed TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking TN-eligible roles. Rather than filtering through general postings, you can search sonographer listings where employers have already indicated willingness to support TN visa sponsorship, which removes the guesswork of cold-applying to facilities unfamiliar with the process.
Can Mexican sonographers access TN status the same way Canadians can?
The qualifying occupation and documentation requirements are the same, but the process differs. Mexican nationals cannot apply at the border and must obtain a TN visa stamp at a U.S. consulate in Mexico before entering the country. Wait times at consulates vary by location and season, so Mexican sonographers should factor in consular scheduling lead time when planning a start date with an employer.
