Verify your accounting degree meets TN requirements
TN visa sponsorship under the Accountant category requires a degree in accounting or a directly related field. A business administration degree alone may not qualify, so gather your official transcripts and a credential evaluation before applying to roles.
Target public accounting firms during busy seasons
Regional and national CPA firms hire Tax Interns in volume ahead of tax season, and many already have TN filing workflows in place. Applying in August through October puts you in front of hiring managers before headcount is finalized.
Request an offer letter that names TN visa status
Your offer letter must specify your job title, duties, start date, and that sponsorship is provided under the TN Accountant category. A letter that omits visa classification can cause delays at the port of entry or consulate.
Search TN-specific job listings through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Tax Intern roles by employers with recent visa filings, so you're not spending time on companies unfamiliar with visa sponsorship processes. It removes the guesswork from your job search at the employer-targeting stage.
Understand Canadian versus Mexican filing differences
Canadian citizens can present TN documentation directly at a U.S. land border or pre-clearance airport and receive same-day approval. Mexican citizens must schedule a consular interview, which adds weeks to the timeline, so plan your start date accordingly.
Prepare a duty description aligned to TN Accountant criteria
CBP officers assess whether your actual day-to-day work fits the TN Accountant occupation definition. Have your employer prepare a support letter outlining your specific duties—such as tax return preparation, compliance research, or financial statement analysis—for you to present at your border crossing (if Canadian) or U.S. consulate appointment (if Mexican).
Tax Intern TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Tax Intern role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, Tax Intern positions qualify under the TN Accountant category, provided the role requires and you hold a bachelor's degree in accounting or a closely related field. The duties must involve accounting work such as tax return preparation, compliance analysis, or audit support. Internships that are purely administrative or clerical in nature would not meet the specialty occupation threshold CBP applies.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Tax Intern roles?
TN visa sponsorship for Tax Interns is significantly more straightforward than H-1B visa. There is no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no lengthy USCIS petition wait. Canadian citizens can receive approval at the border on their start date. H-1B visa selection is uncertain and tied to an April lottery, making it impractical for an internship timeline. For short-term or seasonal tax roles, TN is the practical option for eligible nationals.
What documents does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must provide a signed offer letter on company letterhead that includes your job title, a description of duties aligned to the Accountant category, your anticipated start and end dates, and your compensation structure. Some employers also prepare a support letter referencing your qualifications and explaining why the role requires an accounting degree. Canadian citizens bring these documents to the port of entry; Mexican citizens submit them at the consular appointment.
How do I find Tax Intern employers who already sponsor TN visas?
Migrate Mate lets you search Tax Intern listings filtered by employers with TN visa sponsorship history, which saves time you would otherwise spend cold-contacting HR teams unfamiliar with the process. Focusing on employers who have sponsored before means the offer letter and filing workflow are already understood internally, reducing delays between your offer and your start date.
Can a Tax Intern role be extended under TN status, and what is the maximum duration?
Yes, TN status is granted in increments of up to three years and can be extended indefinitely as long as you maintain a qualifying job offer and meet the Accountant category requirements. For Tax Intern roles that convert to full-time positions, your employer can file a new TN petition reflecting the updated title and duties. There is no lifetime cap on extensions for either Canadian or Mexican nationals under the USMCA.
