TN Visa Intern Jobs
Intern roles can qualify for TN visa sponsorship when the position falls under a USMCA-listed professional category and requires specialized knowledge. Canadian citizens enter without a cap or lottery; Mexican citizens face a limited annual allocation. Securing sponsorship means your employer must document the internship as a qualifying professional occupation from day one.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Intern
Verify your internship qualifies as professional
TN status requires the role to map to a USMCA-listed occupation like engineer, accountant, or scientist. An internship titled 'general intern' without a defined professional function will get denied at the border or consulate.
Gather degree documentation before applying
CBP officers require proof your education matches the occupation. Bring your official transcripts, degree certificate, and a credential evaluation if your institution is outside Canada or Mexico. Incomplete documents cause same-day denials.
Ask employers for a detailed support letter
Your offer letter must specify the USMCA job category, your duties, your qualifications, and the internship duration. A generic offer letter is the single most common reason TN applications stall at the port of entry.
Target employers with structured internship programs
Companies with formal internship pipelines already understand professional role classifications and visa sponsorship processes. They're far more likely to write a qualifying support letter and have HR processes ready for TN documentation.
Search Migrate Mate to find TN-sponsoring employers
Migrate Mate filters job listings by TN visa sponsorship, so you're not guessing which internship programs support international hires. Search by occupation category to find roles that match your professional field and USMCA classification.
Plan your port of entry or consulate strategy early
Canadians can apply for TN status directly at a U.S. land border or airport without a visa stamp. Mexican nationals must schedule a consular interview, which can take weeks. Build this timeline into your internship start date negotiation.

Find Intern JobsIntern TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Can an internship actually qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, but only if the internship role aligns with a specific USMCA-listed professional occupation, such as engineer, computer systems analyst, or accountant. The title 'intern' alone means nothing to CBP. What matters is whether your duties, your degree, and the job category form a consistent match that an officer can verify on the spot.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for intern roles?
TN is significantly faster and more practical for internships. H-1B requires lottery selection, a minimum six-month wait after April registration, and substantial employer filing fees. TN lets Canadian citizens apply at the border the same day with an offer letter, making it viable for summer or semester-length internships where timing is everything.
What should a TN-qualifying internship offer letter include?
The letter must state the specific USMCA occupation category, a description of your daily professional duties, your start and end dates, your compensation, and a statement confirming your educational credentials meet the role's requirements. Vague language like 'assist the team' without specifying a professional function gives CBP officers grounds to deny entry.
Where can I find internships that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface jobs and internships where employers are open to TN visa sponsorship. Because many companies don't explicitly advertise TN support, using a platform that filters by visa type saves you from applying to positions where sponsorship was never an option. Search by your professional occupation category for the most relevant results.
Does my internship employer need to file anything with USCIS for TN status?
No USCIS petition is required for TN status. For Canadians, the employer provides the support letter and you present it at the border, where CBP adjudicates the application on the spot. For Mexican nationals, the consulate handles the visa stamp. Neither route requires the employer to file paperwork with USCIS in advance, which is a major operational advantage over H-1B.
