Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Human Resources Intern
Frame your degree for specialty occupation
TN visa eligibility depends on your HR role requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. List your degree discipline prominently on your resume and transcript, and confirm the internship posting explicitly requires that credential, not just prefers it.
Target employers with active HR hiring pipelines
Companies that consistently hire HR interns through structured rotational programs are far more likely to have processed TN sponsorship before. Prioritize Fortune 500 firms and mid-size multinationals with dedicated HR departments over small businesses without in-house legal support.
Clarify TN scope with your offer letter early
Your offer letter must describe duties that map to a recognized TN professional category. Ask HR to confirm the letter specifies human resources as the occupational field and ties your intern duties to that specialty before you finalize acceptance.
Search for HR intern roles using Migrate Mate
Filter by TN visa sponsorship directly to surface employers already set up to file. Migrate Mate shows which companies are actively hiring HR interns with TN support, so you're not cold-applying to organizations unfamiliar with the process.
Prepare your credential package before outreach
Assemble your official transcripts, degree certificate, and any professional HR certifications before you start applying. Canadian citizens presenting at the port of entry need these documents on the day of crossing, and delays getting them can cost you a start date.
Understand Mexican TN timing versus Canadian port entry
Mexican citizens must schedule a consular visa appointment and allow four to eight weeks for processing, unlike Canadian citizens who can receive TN status at the border same-day. Build that lead time into your negotiation when discussing a start date with any employer.
Human Resources Intern TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an HR intern role actually qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, provided the position requires a bachelor's degree in human resources, business administration, or a closely related field and your duties align with professional HR work rather than purely clerical tasks. The role description in your offer letter must reflect that professional-level requirement. Internships that only require general business coursework without a specific degree field are harder to support under TN criteria.
How does TN compare to H-1B for an HR intern position?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and no multi-month wait for approval. An H-1B visa for an intern-level role would require surviving a random lottery with roughly a one-in-four selection rate, then waiting until October 1 to start work. For Canadian professionals, TN is straightforwardly faster, and for Mexican citizens the consular route, while slower, still avoids the lottery entirely.
What documents does a Canadian citizen need to get TN status for an HR internship at the border?
You need a valid Canadian passport, a detailed offer letter from the employer on company letterhead describing your HR duties and confirming a degree requirement, and your official transcripts or degree certificate. Some officers also ask for evidence tying your specific degree field to the role. Carrying a copy of the TN professional categories list from USCIS can help if a border officer questions eligibility.
Where can I find HR intern jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter roles by visa type and find HR internships at employers who have explicitly indicated TN sponsorship support, which saves you from spending weeks applying to companies that decline international candidates at the offer stage. Searching by sponsorship status upfront significantly shortens your timeline to a qualifying offer.
Can a Mexican citizen start an HR internship on TN status, and how long does the process take?
Yes. Mexican citizens apply for TN status at a U.S. consulate rather than at a land border port of entry. Consular appointments and processing typically add four to eight weeks to your timeline. You'll need the same core documents as a Canadian applicant plus a completed DS-160 form and the nonimmigrant visa application fee. Negotiate your start date with that lead time in mind.
