Verify your degree supports TN classification
TN visa eligibility for tech intern roles hinges on a direct link between your degree field and the specific duties listed in the offer letter. A computer science or engineering degree supports most classifications; a general business degree usually doesn't.
Request a duty-specific offer letter early
CBP officers approve the TN on the spot at the Canadian border based solely on your offer letter. Ask your employer to list specific technical duties, your degree field, and the job's classification category before you finalize the offer.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-ready internships
Most job listings don't advertise TN sponsorship explicitly. Migrate Mate filters roles by employers with active TN and H-1B visa filing history, so you can focus applications on companies that have already navigated the sponsorship process for tech roles.
Prepare credential equivalency documents if needed
Mexican nationals with three-year bachelor's degrees or degrees from non-USMCA-accredited institutions should prepare a credential evaluation before their consulate appointment. CBP and consular officers may request evidence that your degree meets U.S. equivalency standards.
Understand how internship duration affects your TN timeline
TN status is granted in increments of up to three years. If your internship converts to a full-time role, your employer can extend the same TN rather than starting over, provided duties remain consistent with the original Computer Systems Analyst classification.
Technology Intern TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technology Intern role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
It depends on the duties, not the title. TN sponsorship applies when the internship involves computer systems analysis, software engineering, or IT consulting and you hold a relevant degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Internships that involve general administrative support or project coordination without a technical degree requirement typically don't qualify under the Computer Systems Analyst category.
How does TN sponsorship compare to H-1B for tech intern roles?
TN has no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and no USCIS petition required if you're Canadian applying at the border. H-1B requires a lottery entry, a formal USCIS petition, and can take months to adjudicate. For short-duration tech internships, TN is almost always faster and simpler, provided the role and your degree align with an eligible TN category.
Where can I find Technology Intern jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most internship listings don't specify TN sponsorship, which makes targeted searching difficult. Migrate Mate lets you filter by employers with documented TN and H-1B filing history, so you're applying to companies that have already sponsored international professionals in technical roles rather than guessing from the job description alone.
Can a Mexican national get TN sponsorship for a tech internship?
Yes, but the process differs from Canada. Mexican nationals must apply at a U.S. consulate rather than at the border, and the annual TN allocation for Mexican citizens is capped. You'll need a consulate appointment, the certified offer letter, and supporting credential documents. Processing times vary by consulate, so apply well before your intended start date.
What happens to my TN status if the internship ends early or doesn't convert to full-time?
Your TN status is tied to the specific employer and role listed in your approval. If the internship ends before the approved period, your TN authorization ends with it. You have a 60-day grace period to depart, change status, or find a new qualifying employer who can file a fresh TN on your behalf before your authorized stay expires.
