Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Construction Intern
Match your credentials to a qualifying TN category
Construction Intern roles don't have their own TN visa category. You need a degree in civil engineering, architecture, or a related field to qualify under Engineer or Scientist. Confirm your specific degree aligns with the job's technical duties before applying.
Target firms with active engineering project pipelines
General contractors and civil engineering consultancies are the most reliable sponsors for construction intern roles. Look for firms with ongoing federal or infrastructure contracts, as those projects typically require licensed engineers who expect to file TN petitions routinely.
Get your degree credentials evaluated before the offer stage
If your engineering degree is from a Canadian or Mexican institution, a credential evaluation from a NACES-member evaluator confirms U.S. equivalency. Do this before negotiations so you're ready when the employer asks for documentation.
Ask the employer to prepare a detailed offer letter
TN approval at the border or consulate depends heavily on the offer letter. It must specify your job title, duties tied to your engineering or science credentials, the period of employment, and that you won't be displacing a U.S. worker.
Search for sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to find construction and engineering employers with recent visa filings who understand work visa sponsorship processes. Filtering by employer sponsorship experience helps you target firms familiar with supporting international talent, rather than cold-applying to companies with no visa sponsorship background.
Understand the Mexican consular appointment timeline
Mexican citizens can't self-process at the border and must schedule a consular interview, which can add several weeks. Factor this into your start date negotiation with the employer so you're not agreeing to an unrealistic first day.
Construction Intern TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Construction Intern role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Not automatically. The TN visa doesn't have a standalone category for construction interns. To qualify, your role and your degree must align with a recognized TN category such as Engineer. If your internship involves civil, structural, or construction engineering tasks and you hold a relevant degree, it can qualify under that category.
How does TN compare to H-1B for construction internship roles?
TN is significantly more accessible for this role. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and approval can happen at the port of entry. H-1B visa requires lottery selection, a spring registration window, and months of processing time. For a construction internship tied to an engineering degree, TN is the faster and more reliable path for Canadian and Mexican citizens.
What documents does the employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer needs to provide a formal offer letter on company letterhead that specifies your job title, your professional duties tied to a qualifying TN category, the employment period, and your educational qualifications. For construction intern roles, the letter should explicitly describe the engineering or technical nature of your work, not just administrative or general site tasks.
Where can I find construction employers who sponsor TN visas?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter employers by their recent visa filings in construction and engineering, which surfaces firms already experienced with work visa sponsorship. That experience matters because employers who have sponsored visas before are far more likely to move quickly once you receive an offer.
Can I apply for a construction internship TN visa if my degree is still in progress?
No. TN requires a completed degree from a recognized institution that aligns with the qualifying professional category. If you're still enrolled, you aren't eligible for TN status yet. F-1 CPT may be an option if you're studying at a U.S. institution, but TN requires the credential to already be conferred at the time of application.
