Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Finance Intern
Confirm your degree supports the petition
TN sponsorship for Finance Intern roles depends on a direct match between your degree field and your job duties. A degree in accounting or finance supports financial analysis work, but a general business degree may not satisfy CBP without additional documentation.
Target employers experienced with visa sponsorship
Firms experienced with visa sponsorship understand the work visa process and face fewer delays. Large financial services companies and regional banks with structured internship programs are more likely to have in-house immigration support for interns, including familiarity with TN visa requirements such as preparing employer support letters and ensuring role eligibility based on your educational background.
Use Migrate Mate to find Finance Intern roles with TN sponsorship
Searching broadly wastes time on roles where employers won't file. Migrate Mate filters Finance Intern positions by employers who actively sponsor TN visas, so your applications go to companies already set up to support your status.
Get your support letter language right
The employer's support letter must describe your duties using Economist-category language, specifying financial analysis, economic research, or modeling tasks. Vague language like 'general business support' gives CBP grounds to deny entry at the border.
Plan around the intern role's short duration
TN status is granted for up to three years, but many internships run only 10 to 16 weeks. Confirm with your employer whether they'll sponsor a full TN term or a shorter period tied to the internship, since this affects your re-entry options.
Prepare for CBP questions if entering as a Canadian
Canadian citizens applying at the port of entry should carry copies of your degree transcripts, the employer's support letter, and your offer letter. CBP officers may ask how your coursework directly relates to the intern role's financial duties.

Find Finance Intern JobsFinance Intern TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Finance Intern role actually qualify for TN status?
It depends on how the role is defined. TN status for finance work typically falls under the Economist category, which requires duties centered on financial analysis, economic research, or quantitative modeling, and a degree in economics, finance, or a closely related field. Internships framed as general business support or administrative work are unlikely to qualify. The employer's support letter must describe duties that match the category precisely.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Finance Intern positions?
For Canadian and Mexican professionals, TN has a major structural advantage over H-1B: there is no annual lottery and no cap for Canadians, so sponsorship can proceed any time of year. H-1B requires your employer to enter the lottery in March for an October start, making it impractical for summer or fall internships. TN also processes faster, with Canadians often approved at the border on the day of entry.
Can a Mexican national get TN sponsorship for a Finance Intern role?
Yes, but the process differs from the Canadian pathway. Mexican citizens must apply for TN status at a U.S. consulate rather than at the port of entry, which typically adds several weeks of processing time. Mexico also has a separate annual TN allocation under USMCA. You'll need the same documentation as a Canadian applicant, including a degree in a qualifying field and a detailed employer support letter describing your financial duties.
What documents does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must produce a support letter on company letterhead that names the TN category, describes your specific financial duties, states the internship's duration, and confirms your degree qualifies you for the role. You'll also need your academic transcripts or degree certificate and the formal offer letter. CBP or the consulate evaluates all three together, so gaps or vague language in any document can result in a denial.
How do I find Finance Intern employers who will actually sponsor TN visas?
Most internship postings don't specify visa sponsorship, and many hiring managers are unfamiliar with TN as a separate pathway from H-1B. Migrate Mate focuses specifically on TN-sponsoring employers, letting you filter Finance Intern roles by companies that have supported TN applications before, so you spend time on opportunities where sponsorship is genuinely on the table.
