Align your degree to the role
TN visa classification for strategy work hinges on a direct match between your degree field and your internship duties. A business or economics degree supporting market analysis clears this bar; a general arts degree likely doesn't without additional documentation.
Target firms with established TN history
Consulting firms, corporate strategy teams at large multinationals, and think tanks routinely sponsor TN professionals. Focus your applications on organizations that already have immigration counsel on retainer, since they can move quickly once they extend an offer.
Clarify TN category with your offer letter
Before your employer drafts your support letter, confirm whether your duties map to Economist or Management Consultant. The wrong category on a CBP application causes delays or denials at the border, so get this right before the offer is finalized.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Search Migrate Mate to identify strategy roles at employers actively sponsoring TN professionals. Filtering by sponsorship history saves you from applying to companies that haven't navigated TN before and may stall once the paperwork reality sets in.
Prepare a degree equivalency letter early
If your degree is from a Mexican or Canadian institution with a different credit structure, have a credential evaluation completed before you receive an offer. CBP officers assess equivalency on the spot for Canadians, and consular officers do the same for Mexicans.
Negotiate internship start dates around CBP processing
Canadian citizens applying at the port of entry can often receive same-day TN approval, but plan a buffer of at least two to three business days before your expected start date to account for secondary inspection or documentation requests.
Strategy Intern TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Strategy Intern role actually qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, but the classification depends on your specific duties. Strategy internship work involving economic analysis or forecasting can qualify under the Economist category. Roles focused on organizational planning or competitive strategy may fit Management Consultant. Your employer's support letter needs to describe duties that map clearly to one of those defined TN occupations, not just use the job title.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for a Strategy Intern position?
TN has no lottery and no annual cap for Canadian citizens, which means sponsorship can happen year-round without waiting for an April selection cycle. H-1B visa requires registration in March and a lottery draw, with work authorization not starting until October at the earliest. For a strategy internship with a near-term start date, TN is a faster, more predictable path for Canadians and eligible Mexicans.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer must provide a detailed support letter on company letterhead that describes your job title, duties, the TN category you're applying under, your anticipated compensation, and your employment period. The letter should also confirm you hold the required degree. Canadian citizens present this letter directly to CBP at the port of entry. Mexican citizens submit it as part of their consular visa packet.
Where can I find Strategy Intern roles that include TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It filters roles by TN visa sponsorship so you aren't wasting time applying to employers who have no experience with the process. Many strategy internship postings don't mention sponsorship explicitly, so searching a platform designed around immigration status is more reliable than filtering general job boards.
Can a Mexican citizen get TN sponsorship for a Strategy Intern role, and is the process different?
Yes, Mexican citizens are eligible for TN status in qualifying strategy roles. The main difference is process: Mexican nationals must apply at a U.S. consulate for a TN visa stamp before traveling, rather than seeking admission at the port of entry like Canadians can. Appointment wait times at consulates vary by location and season, so factor consular processing time into your internship start date negotiation with your employer.
