Role
We are looking for a Principal DevOps Engineer to join our team. This role is remote position, reporting to the VPE of Infrastructure.
You will architect and manage the global cloud infrastructure for our Zero Trust Networking Services, owning the delivery pipeline and operational health of a massive-scale, multi-region distributed system. Bridging the gap between Network Engineering and Cloud Operations, you will orchestrate highly scalable, distributed control and data plane services in the public cloud.
What you'll do (Role Expectations)
- Design and implement a multi-region AWS architecture and lead the development of modular Terraform libraries to automate provisioning across diverse geographies
- Architect self-healing infrastructure using advanced cloud load balancing, auto-scaling patterns, and Multi-AZ database topologies to ensure high availability
- Modernize CI/CD pipelines and implement Blue/Green and Canary deployment strategies to ensure zero-downtime upgrades for a continuously running global network service
- Build comprehensive SRE dashboards and implement intelligent alerting frameworks to detect regional outages or capacity exhaustion before they impact customers
- Monitor cloud resource utilization and implement scaling policies that perfectly balance performance requirements with cost-efficiency
Who You Are (Success Profile)
- You thrive in ambiguity. You're comfortable building the path as you walk it. You thrive in a dynamic environment, seeing ambiguity not as a hindrance, but as the raw material to build something meaningful.
- You act like an owner. Your passion for the mission fuels your bias for action, and you operate with integrity because you genuinely care about the outcome. You adapt to what's needed, navigating seamlessly between high-level strategy and hands-on execution.
- You are a problem-solver. You seek out challenges because you are energized by finding solutions, knowing that solving the hard problems delivers the biggest impact.
- You are customer-obsessed. You build deep empathy for the customer—both internal and external—and anchor your decisions in solving their real-world problems. You champion their needs from start to finish, knowing their success is our success.
- You operate with urgency. You understand that in a high-growth environment, speed and quality are not mutually exclusive. You have a relentless focus on execution and a bias for action, delivering high-impact results quickly to win for the customer and the team.
What We're Looking for (Minimum Qualifications)
- 12+ years of overall experience in Software Engineering, DevOps, or Site Reliability Engineering combined with a BS/MS in Computer Science or relevant field
- Deep mastery of AWS services and architecting AWS-managed SQL and NoSQL data stores, with a focus on designing scalable local and multi-region deployment strategies
- Advanced expertise in Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and expert proficiency in Python or Go for building automation tooling
- Strong knowledge of Linux/BSD internals, observability stacks (Prometheus, InfluxDB), and security compliance (PKI, IAM, DevSecOps)
- U.S. citizenship due to the nature of the customers assigned to this role
What Will Make You Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications)
- Experience managing large-scale distributed systems or IoT-style connectivity platforms
- Background in Network Engineering or working with Data Plane forwarding technologies
- Experience with Chaos Engineering methodologies in a public cloud environment

Which companies in California sponsor visas for principal devops engineers?
Large tech employers with established immigration programs are the most consistent sponsors. Companies like Google, Apple, Meta, Salesforce, Oracle, and Amazon Web Services regularly file H-1B petitions for senior DevOps and platform engineering roles in California. Mid-size cloud and SaaS companies based in the Bay Area and Los Angeles also sponsor, though their programs vary in structure and frequency.
Which visa types are most common for principal devops engineer roles in California?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for principal DevOps engineers in California, given the role's requirement for a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Senior candidates with multinational backgrounds may also see L-1A or L-1B petitions. Individuals with an extraordinary record of achievement in infrastructure or platform engineering may qualify for the O-1A.
Which cities in California have the most principal devops engineer sponsorship jobs?
The San Francisco Bay Area, including San Jose, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, and San Francisco itself, accounts for the largest share of principal DevOps engineer sponsorship activity in California. Los Angeles has a growing presence driven by entertainment technology, fintech, and e-commerce companies. San Diego has a smaller but active cluster tied to biotech infrastructure and defense-adjacent technology employers.
How to find principal devops engineer visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can search for principal DevOps engineer roles in California without sorting through positions that don't offer sponsorship. Given the seniority of the role, filtering by California's major tech hubs on Migrate Mate and targeting companies with a documented H-1B filing history in infrastructure and platform engineering is a practical starting point.
Are there state-specific considerations for principal devops engineer sponsorship roles in California?
California's prevailing wage requirements under the H-1B program apply at the county level, and the Bay Area and Los Angeles metro areas carry some of the highest prevailing wages in the country for senior engineering roles. Employers filing Labor Condition Applications for principal DevOps positions in these metros must certify wages at those elevated levels. California also has strict employee classification laws, which can affect how sponsoring employers structure employment arrangements.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored principal devops engineer jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
