JOB SUMMARY
As a Mechanical Engineer 2 at Terumo, you’ll take a hands-on role in developing new medical devices, from early concept through design verification and transfer to manufacturing.
Working with more independence than an early-career engineer, you’ll own the mechanical design of assigned subsystems, make sound engineering decisions on moderately complex problems, and help guide junior engineers along the way. You’ll work across R&D, quality, regulatory, and manufacturing to turn design concepts into products that meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements.
The systems you help create are used by clinicians and blood center teams to collect, process, and deliver the blood- and cell-based therapies that patients depend on.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Lead the mechanical design of assigned components and subsystems for new products, from concept through detailed design, applying sound engineering judgment to complex technical decisions.
- Develop and evaluate design concepts using engineering analysis, modeling, and prototyping to test feasibility and guide design decisions.
- Plan and carry out mechanical characterization, verification, and validation at the component and system level to confirm products meet performance and safety requirements.
- Apply design controls and risk management throughout development, identifying and mitigating mechanical safety risks across the product lifecycle.
- Support design transfer to manufacturing, working with operations to make designs manufacturable, repeatable, and ready for production.
- Evaluate, select, and adapt engineering techniques and new mechanical technologies to develop innovative, reliable designs.
- Manage project responsibilities such as scope, schedule, cost estimates, and execution for assigned design work.
- Prepare and review engineering deliverables, including reports, SOPs, protocols, design changes, drawings, schedules, and supplier documentation.
- Develop reports, charts, and analyses to support design recommendations, and present findings to cross-functional teams and technical leadership.
- Provide technical guidance to technicians and junior engineers, and collaborate across R&D, quality, regulatory, and manufacturing.
- Apply FDA and other regulatory requirements, supporting Quality System and Design Controls with particular attention to documentation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education
Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
Experience
Relevant internship or project experience in mechanical engineering, preferably with a focus on medical device development.
Skills
- Ability to solve moderately complex technical problems, make sound design decisions, and execute with minimal supervision.
- Strong CAD design skills (e.g., SolidWorks) and experience with PLM/PDM systems, with Windchill preferred.
- Experience taking mechanical designs through development, verification, and transfer to manufacturing.
- Working knowledge of design controls, risk management, and medical device regulations and standards (e.g., FDA, ISO 13485, IEC 60601).
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as machining, 3D printing, and molding, and how they shape design choices.
- Knowledge of engineering analysis methods, statistical tools, and continuous improvement techniques.
- Project management skills covering scope, schedule, cost, and deliverables.
- Clear written and verbal communication, including presenting technical information to audiences up to senior management.
- Ability to guide technicians and junior engineers and collaborate across functions and locations.
- Initiative, curiosity, and ownership, with adaptability in a fast-paced, regulated environment.

Which companies sponsor visas for mechanical engineers in Colorado?
Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Intelligence & Space have consistent H-1B sponsorship histories for mechanical engineers at their Littleton and Aurora facilities. Ball Aerospace in Boulder, Woodward in Fort Collins, and Trimble in Westminster have also filed LCAs for mechanical engineering roles. Energy sector employers including SolarWinds and several oil and gas firms in Denver round out the sponsoring employer base.
Which visa types are most common for mechanical engineer roles in Colorado?
The H-1B is the most common visa for mechanical engineers in Colorado. It requires a bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical engineering or a closely related field and employer sponsorship. Canadian and Mexican engineers may qualify for the TN visa under the NAFTA/USMCA engineer category, which is processed at the border and does not require advance USCIS approval. Australian engineers may also consider the E-3 visa.
Which cities in Colorado have the most mechanical engineer sponsorship jobs?
The Denver metro area, including Littleton, Aurora, and Englewood, accounts for the largest share of mechanical engineering sponsorship activity in Colorado, driven by aerospace and defense contractors. Boulder is a secondary hub with aerospace, energy technology, and research-focused employers. Fort Collins has a growing advanced manufacturing presence, and Colorado Springs attracts defense-related engineering roles tied to military installations.
How to find mechanical engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Colorado?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for visa sponsorship, letting you search mechanical engineer roles in Colorado without sorting through employers unlikely to sponsor. Because aerospace and defense dominate Colorado's engineering sector, filtering by industry can narrow results further. Migrate Mate aggregates sponsorship-open postings so you can focus applications on employers with a demonstrated history of filing H-1B or other work visas.
Are there state-specific considerations for mechanical engineers seeking visa sponsorship in Colorado?
Colorado's mechanical engineering market is heavily influenced by aerospace and defense, meaning many employers hold federal contracts. Some positions at contractors like Lockheed Martin or Raytheon require security clearances, which are generally not available to non-U.S. citizens or permanent residents. This limits sponsorship to unclassified roles at those firms. The University of Colorado Boulder and Colorado State University also feed engineering talent pipelines that some employers use for entry-level sponsorship.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored mechanical engineer jobs in Colorado?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
