Define Identity and Access Management (IAM) strategies, security baselines, and resource lifecycle policies to guide the Systems Engineering and Operations teams in secure, standardized resource provisioning.
Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Champion automation by establishing IaC standards and CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure deployment, ensuring the Systems Engineering team can safely and consistently manage cloud resources.
Data & AI Architecture: Architect scalable, secure data platforms—including Data Lakes and Modern Data Warehouses—to aggregate diverse data streams. Ensure the underlying infrastructure optimized for high-performance data analytics, reporting pipelines, and advanced AI/ML modeling.
Cost Optimization & Performance Tuning: Implement FinOps practices to monitor, analyze, and optimize cloud spend while ensuring optimal system performance and scalability.
Required Qualifications:
Experience: 7+ years in IT infrastructure/architecture, with at least 3+ years specifically focused on AWS cloud architecture and large-scale migrations.
AWS Expertise: Deep technical knowledge of core AWS services (EC2, S3, RDS, VPC, IAM, Route 53) and specialized data/analytics services (AWS Glue, Redshift, Athena, EMR, SageMaker, Amazon Bedrock).
Automation & Provisioning: Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools (e.g., Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, AWS CDK) and configuration management.
Governance Frameworks: Proven experience setting up AWS Organizations, AWS Control Tower, and Service Control Policies (SCPs) for enterprise compliance.
Certifications: One or more of the following: AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional or Associate, AWS DevOps Engineer – Professional or Associate.
Preferred Skills:
-
Familiarity with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Amazon ECS/EKS).
-
Strong understanding of data governance, data privacy regulations, and security compliance frameworks.

Which companies sponsor visas for backend engineers in Kansas?
Several Kansas employers have a track record of H-1B sponsorship for engineering roles. Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita, Cerner (now Oracle Health) in the Kansas City metro, and financial services firms in Overland Park have filed Labor Condition Applications for backend and software engineering positions. Large employers in aerospace, healthcare IT, and fintech are generally the most consistent sponsors in the state.
Which visa types are most common for backend engineer roles in Kansas?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for backend engineers in Kansas, as software and systems engineering roles typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring a relevant bachelor's degree or higher. Some employers also support L-1B transfers for intracompany specialists. Candidates already holding OPT or STEM OPT can work while an H-1B petition is filed, provided the employer initiates sponsorship before the authorization expires.
Which cities in Kansas have the most backend engineer sponsorship jobs?
Overland Park and the broader Kansas City metro area generate the highest concentration of backend engineering sponsorship opportunities in Kansas, driven by fintech, healthcare IT, and enterprise software companies. Wichita is a secondary hub, where aerospace and defense contractors hire engineers with systems and backend expertise. Lawrence sees some activity tied to University of Kansas research and affiliated technology firms.
How to find backend engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Kansas?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can search backend engineer roles in Kansas without sorting through positions that won't support international candidates. The platform surfaces employers who have sponsored H-1B petitions for engineering roles, which is particularly useful in a state where sponsorship-active employers are concentrated in a few metro areas rather than spread statewide.
Are there any state-specific considerations for backend engineers pursuing sponsorship in Kansas?
Kansas does not have a state income tax framework that significantly affects visa sponsorship logistics, but prevailing wage requirements under the H-1B program are set at the federal level using DOL wage data for each metro area. Wichita and Overland Park have different prevailing wage benchmarks, so compensation offers should reflect the specific work location. University of Kansas and Kansas State University also generate a pipeline of OPT-eligible candidates that some employers actively recruit and sponsor.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored backend engineer jobs in Kansas?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
