Which companies sponsor visas for mental health therapists in Michigan?
Michigan's most active sponsors for mental health therapist roles include Henry Ford Health System, Beaumont Health (now Corewell Health), Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network, and Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services. Federally qualified health centers such as Cherry Health and Southwest Solutions also sponsor, particularly for therapists willing to work in underserved communities. University-affiliated clinics at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University occasionally sponsor qualifying positions as well.
Which visa types are most common for mental health therapist roles in Michigan?
The H-1B is the most common visa for licensed mental health therapists in Michigan, as the role generally qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a master's degree in counseling, social work, or psychology. Some employers, particularly nonprofits and health systems, sponsor EB-3 immigrant visas for permanent positions. Therapists from certain countries may also be eligible for J-1 exchange visitor visas through clinical training programs affiliated with Michigan universities.
Which cities in Michigan have the most mental health therapist sponsorship jobs?
Detroit and its surrounding metro area generate the largest volume of sponsored mental health therapist positions in Michigan, driven by major health systems and community mental health agencies. Grand Rapids is a secondary hub, with Pine Rest and Corewell Health both headquartered there. Lansing and Ann Arbor also see consistent openings, particularly through state agencies, university health systems, and outpatient behavioral health networks serving college populations.
How to find mental health therapist visa sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles that offer visa sponsorship, making it straightforward to search for mental health therapist positions in Michigan without sorting through listings from employers who do not sponsor. You can narrow results by city or region across the state. Because sponsoring a therapist requires licensure coordination alongside immigration filings, targeting employers with established HR or credentialing infrastructure, such as large health systems and community mental health authorities, tends to be more productive.
Are there state-specific considerations for mental health therapist visa sponsorship in Michigan?
Michigan requires independent licensure (LPC, LMSW, or LLP) before a therapist can practice independently, and most H-1B petitions are tied to the specific licensed role. Foreign-trained therapists often need credential evaluation to confirm their degree meets Michigan licensing board standards. Some Michigan counties designated as Mental Health Professional Shortage Areas may offer employers additional incentive to recruit and sponsor international candidates to fill persistent gaps in behavioral health coverage.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored mental health therapist jobs in Michigan?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
