Which companies sponsor visas for behavioral health specialists in New York?
Large hospital systems and integrated health networks are the most consistent sponsors. NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, Montefiore Medical Center, Mount Sinai Health System, and NewYork-Presbyterian have all sponsored behavioral health roles. Community mental health organizations and nonprofit care providers in the state also file sponsorship petitions, particularly for licensed clinical positions in underserved areas.
Which visa types are most common for behavioral health specialist roles in New York?
The H-1B is the most common visa for behavioral health specialists, as roles requiring a bachelor's or master's degree in psychology, counseling, or social work typically meet the specialty occupation standard. The J-1 visa is also used, particularly for clinical training programs affiliated with academic medical centers. Candidates with recognized clinical licenses may also qualify under the TN visa if they hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship.
Which cities in New York have the most behavioral health specialist sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the largest share of sponsorship opportunities, driven by its concentration of major hospital networks, federally qualified health centers, and community mental health programs across all five boroughs. Buffalo and Rochester also have active hiring markets, with healthcare systems like ECMC and Rochester Regional Health employing behavioral health staff. Albany's state government and university-affiliated health programs contribute additional openings.
How to find behavioral health specialist visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate lists behavioral health specialist positions in New York that are open to visa sponsorship, filtering out roles that don't support international candidates. You can search by role, state, and visa type to narrow results to positions actively seeking sponsored applicants. This is particularly useful for behavioral health roles, where sponsorship availability varies significantly by employer type and clinical setting.
Are there state-specific considerations for behavioral health specialists seeking sponsorship in New York?
New York requires state licensure for most clinical behavioral health roles, including licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) credentials. Employers sponsoring international candidates typically expect licensure eligibility or active licensure at the time of hire. New York State's large Medicaid-funded behavioral health system creates demand in community settings, though nonprofit employers vary in their familiarity with and capacity to manage the sponsorship process.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored behavioral health specialist jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
