Which companies sponsor visas for civil project engineers in New York?
Large engineering and infrastructure firms are the most consistent sponsors for civil project engineers in New York. AECOM, WSP USA, Jacobs, HDR, and Parsons have all filed H-1B visa petitions for civil engineering roles in the state. Public-sector contractors working on MTA, NYSDOT, and Port Authority projects are also significant sources of sponsorship, given the scale and duration of those programs.
Which visa types are most common for civil project engineer roles in New York?
The H-1B is the most common visa for civil project engineers in New York, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering. Candidates with Canadian or Mexican citizenship may qualify for TN visa status under the engineers category, which offers a faster, lottery-free path. Australian citizens can explore the E-3 visa as an alternative to H-1B.
Which cities in New York have the most civil project engineer sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the majority of civil project engineer sponsorship activity in the state, driven by transit, utilities, and infrastructure programs run through agencies like the MTA and DEP. Albany sees hiring tied to state government contracts and NYSDOT regional work. Buffalo has grown as a hub for transportation and energy infrastructure projects, particularly with ongoing investments in Western New York.
How to find civil project engineer visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles that include visa sponsorship, making it easier to identify civil project engineer positions in New York without sorting through listings from employers who don't sponsor. You can search by role and state to surface openings at firms like AECOM, Jacobs, or WSP that have active H-1B sponsorship histories in New York. Filtering by sponsorship status upfront saves significant time in the job search process.
Are there any New York-specific considerations for civil project engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
New York's prevailing wage requirements under state law are often higher than federal DOL benchmarks, which can affect how employers structure compensation for sponsored roles. Engineers working on public contracts may encounter certified payroll requirements. New York also has strong university pipelines from programs at Columbia, Cornell, and CCNY, which means competition for sponsored roles can be higher in the city than in upstate markets where demand still outpaces local supply.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored civil project engineer jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
